Siemens Energy's Cash Bonanza Fuels Buyback Acceleration as Wind Unit Narrows Loss
28.05.2026 - 09:11:50 | boerse-global.de
Siemens Energy's shares slipped 4.0 percent on Wednesday to close at €174.00 on Xetra, a natural pullback after a blistering rally that has nearly doubled the stock over the past year. But behind the daily volatility, the company is firing on multiple cylinders — an accelerated share repurchase, a record order book, and tangible progress at its ailing wind turbine division are painting a far more constructive picture.
The buyback programme is gathering pace far ahead of schedule. Between March 4 and May 19, 2026, Siemens Energy snapped up 12,618,469 of its own shares — equivalent to 1.465 percent of share capital — at an average price of roughly €158.50 apiece, for a total outlay of around €2.0 billion across Xetra and other European trading venues. The entire first tranche was completed in just 77 trading days, well before the original August deadline.
Flush with operating cash flow, management is now pulling forward the next tranche. For fiscal 2026, the company intends to repurchase up to €3 billion of its own stock, up from the previously planned €2 billion. The overall envelope of the programme, announced in November, remains at €6 billion. Combined with the dividend already paid, Siemens Energy expects to return €3.6 billion to shareholders this year, and around €10 billion by 2028.
The firepower comes from a surge in free cash flow. Pre-tax free cash flow jumped 42 percent in the second quarter to €1.975 billion, from €1.390 billion a year earlier, driven by better earnings and hefty customer prepayments. The proceeds from a booming order pipeline are hitting the bank account directly, not just the balance sheet.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Energy?
That order pipeline is staggering. Order intake in the second quarter reached €17.7 billion, producing a book-to-bill ratio of 1.72. The total backlog swelled to €154 billion. Demand in the United States more than doubled year-on-year, while orders for data centre infrastructure poured into the Grid Technologies segment, which booked nearly €2 billion in the first half alone.
Management has responded by lifting its full-year guidance. It now expects comparable revenue growth of 14 to 16 percent, an operating margin before special items of 10 to 12 percent, and net profit of around €4 billion.
Yet the biggest swing factor for investor sentiment remains the turnaround at Siemens Gamesa. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, the wind division's operating loss shrank to €46 million from €374 million in the same period last year. Chief executive Christian Bruch is targeting breakeven in the fourth quarter — July through September — as a leaner portfolio and the resolution of technical glitches on onshore platforms take effect.
Siemens Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Analysts have taken notice. The Deutsche Bank raised its price target to €200. Jefferies sees further upside at €215, while Goldman Sachs is at €212 — all comfortably above Wednesday's close. The stock still sits 6.89 percent below its 52-week high of €188.00, despite year-to-date gains of 42.54 percent and a 103.82 percent surge over the past twelve months. Technically, the share price remains well above its 200-day moving average, a gap of more than 30 percent that underscores the strength of the underlying trend.
All eyes now turn to August 5, 2026, when Siemens Energy publishes its third-quarter results. That report will test whether the record order intake can be converted into sustained margin expansion and cash generation. The accelerated buyback sends a loud signal of management's confidence, but the market's ultimate judgment will rest on how quickly Gamesa closes the last gap to profitability.
