Siemens Energy Launches Major Capital Return Initiative Amid Record Performance
05.03.2026 - 04:58:09 | boerse-global.de
Siemens Energy has unveiled a substantial share repurchase plan valued at up to €2 billion, coinciding with its promotion to the prestigious Stoxx Europe 50 index. This dual capital markets move is underpinned by a record-breaking quarterly performance featuring a doubling of profit and an order backlog of €146 billion. However, the company continues to navigate challenges within its wind power division.
Strong Operational Results Fuel Shareholder Returns
The financial measures are a direct consequence of robust operational figures. For the first quarter of fiscal 2026, new orders surged by approximately one-third year-over-year to €17.6 billion. A standout achievement was the booking of 102 gas turbines, marking the strongest quarterly result in the company's history. Revenue increased by 12.8% to €9.7 billion.
The Grid Technologies segment showed particular dynamism, expanding by 26.9%. Revenue from hyperscalers, driven by energy-intensive AI data centers, more than doubled to over €2 billion. Adjusted profit leapt from €481 million to €1.16 billion.
Following years without a payout, shareholders overwhelmingly approved a dividend of €0.70 per share at the Annual General Meeting on February 26, a move facilitated by the early repayment of a German state guarantee.
Index Inclusion and a Multi-Billion Euro Capital Return Strategy
The share buyback program commenced on March 4 and is authorized to repurchase up to 70 million shares from the market by the end of September. CEO Christian Bruch had previously outlined a broader capital return framework at the AGM, targeting a total return of up to €6 billion to shareholders by the end of fiscal 2028 through a combination of dividends and share repurchases.
In a parallel development, Siemens Energy will join the Stoxx Europe 50 on March 23, replacing spirits manufacturer Diageo. This fast-entry inclusion reflects the company's increased market capitalization of approximately €132 billion. The promotion is expected to trigger significant portfolio adjustments by physically replicating ETFs, generating substantial additional demand for the stock.

Wind Division Shows Improvement But Challenges Persist
The Siemens Gamesa renewable energy unit remains an area of focus. After reporting an annual loss of €1.36 billion, its deficit narrowed considerably to €46 million in Q1 2026. The goal of reaching breakeven within the current fiscal year appears closer, yet strategic debates continue. While activist investor Ananym has called for a separation of the division, institutional investors such as DWS and Union Investment have expressed support for management's current strategy.
Elevated Margin Targets and Sustained Investment
For the full 2026 fiscal year, Siemens Energy is targeting revenue growth between 11% and 13%. Its adjusted profit margin is projected to rise to a range of 9% to 11%, with net income expected to reach €3 to €4 billion. The management team has also raised its medium-term ambition, now targeting a margin of 14% to 16% by 2028—a significant increase over the previous goal of 10% to 12%.
This confidence is matched by continued heavy investment in capacity. The company established seven new factories and created 4,000 jobs in fiscal 2025. For 2026, capital expenditures of roughly €3.5 billion are planned for sites, research, and development. This is supplemented by a $1 billion investment program for US facilities, which includes 1,500 new positions.
The market will gain further insight into the sustainability of Gamesa's recovery and the ongoing demand from AI-driven data centers when the company releases its next quarterly figures on May 12, 2026.
