Siemens Energy is navigating a turbulent stretch. The stock, which has surged nearly 82% over the past twelve months, now trades at €157.84 — a roughly 11% decline from a month ago and almost 20% below its April high of €195.54. Behind the pullback lies a brewing clash between activist investors calling for radical restructuring and management’s own dual-pronged strategy of aggressive buybacks and targeted acquisitions.

Activist hedge fund Ananym Capital has gone public with a demand to spin off the troubled wind turbine subsidiary Gamesa, arguing that the division’s persistent losses drag down the valuation of an otherwise thriving core business. Chief executive Christian Bruch has firmly rejected the idea, instead betting on an operational turnaround at Gamesa and a massive €6 billion share buyback programme planned through the 2027/28 fiscal year. The first tranche of up to €1 billion began in early June and is expected to run until autumn, providing near-term support for the equity.

While the activist focuses on pruning, management is also busy adding. On June 2, Siemens Energy announced the acquisition of Camlin Group, a Northern Irish specialist in grid monitoring and digital power infrastructure. The deal, expected to close by the end of 2026, brings roughly 650 employees and annual revenues of more than £90 million. Camlin develops real-time monitoring, analytics and predictive maintenance tools for grid operators — technologies increasingly essential as renewables inject volatility into power networks. Siemens Energy will integrate Camlin as a wholly owned subsidiary, keeping it operationally independent. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Energy?

The Camlin acquisition fits neatly into the company’s strongest growth engine: Grid Technologies. In May, Siemens Energy raised its comparable revenue growth forecast for the segment to 14-16%, up from an earlier 11-13%. The division’s order backlog hit a record roughly €154 billion at the end of the second quarter. Adding Camlin’s software and service capabilities should help lift margins in that business over the longer term.

Underpinning the core business is the global boom in AI infrastructure. The vast energy demands of data centres are driving a surge in orders for Siemens Energy’s grid and gas turbine equipment. Analysts are largely bullish: most recommend buying the stock, and Goldman Sachs recently lifted its price target to €212, citing AI as a key catalyst.

Even the problem child, Gamesa, is showing faint signs of improvement. The wind division’s operating loss narrowed to €44 million in the latest quarter from €249 million a year earlier. Management has raised its full-year 2026 guidance for the unit, now expecting growth of up to 5%, and continues to target a return to profitability.

The next major test comes on August 5, when Siemens Energy reports quarterly results. A quiet period begins July 1, meaning the buyback will be the main prop for the share price in the interim. For now, the market is weighing activist pressure, acquisition integration, and the fundamental strength of a record backlog — all while the stock cools from its highs.
