A significant milestone has been reached for Siemens Energy with the inaugural power delivery from the Thor offshore wind farm to Denmark's national grid. This event represents more than a routine project update; it serves as a crucial signal of stability for a business division historically plagued by quality control issues and persistent delays.

Operational Milestone for Turbine Technology

The Thor project, a joint venture between RWE and Norges Bank Investment Management, will ultimately feature 72 wind turbines supplied by Siemens Energy’s subsidiary, Siemens Gamesa. Each unit boasts a capacity of up to 15 megawatts. The timely grid connection is particularly noteworthy, as this specific turbine platform has been the source of considerable technical challenges and financial strain for the Gamesa segment in recent years.

Adherence to the project schedule sends a powerful message to future tender processes and potential clients. Upon its full commissioning, scheduled for 2027, the Thor wind farm is projected to achieve a total capacity of 1.1 gigawatts. This output is sufficient to supply renewable electricity to more than one million Danish households.

Sustainability Features Enhance Competitive Edge

Siemens Energy is leveraging the Thor installation as a showcase for its technological and environmental capabilities. Notably, 36 of the turbine towers are constructed using steel manufactured with a reduced carbon footprint, while the rotor blades incorporate partially recyclable materials. These sustainability credentials are becoming increasingly decisive factors in European offshore wind auctions, potentially strengthening the company's competitive position against Asian manufacturers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Energy?

This progress at Thor coincides with Siemens Energy's ongoing involvement in other major North Sea developments, including the German Nordseecluster and the Dutch OranjeWind project. The operational progress provides tangible support for the expectation that Siemens Gamesa is gradually overcoming the hurdles associated with its 15-megawatt turbine class.

The critical next phase will be the construction and installation of the remaining turbines at the Thor site according to plan. The true test, both technically and economically, will be the project's final completion in 2027, which will demonstrate whether this reference project can deliver on its financial promises as well as its engineering specifications.
