Siemens Energy has closed the first tranche of a massive capital return programme, buying back €2 billion worth of its own shares in just 77 trading days. The move, executed between March and May at an average price of €158.50 per share, removed 12.6 million shares from the market and underscores the company’s growing financial firepower. Management now plans to spend up to €6 billion on buybacks by the end of fiscal 2028 — and has already pulled forward an extra €1 billion of that into the current year, accelerated by a surge in operating cash flow.

The cash windfall stems directly from a boom in order intake. Siemens Energy booked a record €17.7 billion in new orders during the second quarter, lifting its book-to-bill ratio to 1.72 and the total backlog to €154 billion. First-half revenue reached nearly €20 billion, while net income doubled to €1.44 billion. The company has raised its full-year revenue growth guidance to between 14% and 16%, with net income targeted at roughly €4 billion.

Much of the momentum comes from the Grid Technologies division, where orders jumped 41.5% in the second quarter to almost €7 billion. For this segment alone, Siemens Energy now expects revenue growth of 25% to 27% — up from a prior range of 19% to 21% — and a target margin of 18% to 20%. As Chinese competitors increasingly apply pricing pressure in grid infrastructure and industrial electrification, the unit’s success makes fair-market access a top priority for management.

Board member Tim Holt is travelling to Beijing this week alongside Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and the CEOs of BASF and Thyssenkrupp, from 26 to 29 May. The agenda focuses on supply-chain resilience and protection of Western innovations in network technologies. The trip follows Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to China in February, which included a stop at Siemens Energy’s factory in Hangzhou, and reflects Berlin’s de-risking approach rather than outright decoupling.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Siemens Energy?

On the shareholder returns front, the buyback is complementing a revived dividend. In March, Siemens Energy paid out €0.70 per share — its first distribution since 2022, approved with 99.99% of votes at the annual general meeting. Analysts now expect the payout for the current fiscal year to rise to as much as €1.84 per share, driven by the strong cash generation.

That financial strength is also drawing attention from sell-side analysts. Jefferies recently lifted its price target from €164 to €215, reiterating a “Buy” rating. JPMorgan sees fair value at €225, and Goldman Sachs at €212. The stock closed at €173.72, up roughly 41.5% year to date, though still about 7% below its 52-week high of €188.00 reached in April.

One risk remains firmly in view: Siemens Gamesa. The wind-power subsidiary narrowed its operating loss to €44 million in the second quarter, down sharply from €249 million a year earlier. Management has made a breakeven in the second half of 2026 an explicit condition for maintaining the overall corporate guidance. Any miss on that front could force a revision, regardless of how well the grid business performs.

Siemens Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Investors will get the next operational update on 5 August 2026, when the company reports its third-quarter results. By then, the interplay between Gamesa’s turnaround, the order backlog conversion, and the accelerating buyback programme will be the key storylines to watch.
