Short Sellers and Institutional Bulls Collide as Plug Power Faces Its Quarterly Reckoning
10.05.2026 - 10:10:32 | boerse-global.de
The hydrogen sector’s most watched earnings event of the week arrives Monday evening, and for Plug Power, the stakes could hardly be higher. The stock has surged roughly 40% since January, closing Friday at €2.65, but that rally rests on a fragile foundation of promise and speculation.
Behind the price action, a tug-of-war is playing out between two very different sets of investors. On one side, heavyweight institutions are piling in. Vanguard recently disclosed a stake of just over 5% in the hydrogen specialist, while Calamos Wealth Management and others have also significantly boosted their holdings, according to recent SEC filings.
On the other side, short sellers are betting just as aggressively against the stock. As of mid-April, nearly 25% of Plug Power’s freely tradable shares were sold short — equivalent to more than 340 million shares. That level of bearish conviction suggests many traders see the current valuation as stretched ahead of what could be a pivotal quarterly report.
The Quebec Contract That Changed the Narrative
What’s driving the bulls is a tangible operational win. In late March, Plug Power secured a major order for a 275-megawatt electrolyzer system destined for Hy2gen’s ammonia nitrate project in Quebec. The deal injected fresh credibility into the company’s project pipeline and helped fuel the year-to-date rally.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
The numbers due Monday evening will test whether that momentum is justified. Analysts expect first-quarter revenue of roughly $142.5 million and a loss per share of $0.09. Some more optimistic forecasts see revenues climbing higher, but the consensus remains cautious.
The company’s previous quarter offered a glimmer of hope: revenue rose 17.6% to $225.2 million, beating expectations, and Plug Power reported its first-ever positive gross margin. That margin improvement is the key metric investors will be watching to see if it can be sustained.
Tariffs and Supply Chain Headwinds
Not everything is moving in the right direction. Tariffs on Chinese components and European electrolyzer imports — now at 20% — are squeezing margins in the fuel cell business. The shift to domestic suppliers is underway but will take time to fully implement.
Plug Power has also missed Wall Street revenue estimates multiple times over the past two years. Another disappointment could quickly erase the recent gains, leaving the stock vulnerable to the short sellers who have circled the company.
The analyst community reflects this uncertainty. The consensus rating is “Hold” with a median price target of $3.64. However, the three most recent ratings from Susquehanna, Jefferies, and Wells Fargo average just $2.18 — well below the current share price. Zacks ranks the stock a 4, equivalent to “Sell.”
The Path to Profitability
Management has set a target of achieving positive operating income by the end of 2026. Last year, the business burned through more than half a billion dollars in operating cash, making the path to breakeven a central concern for investors.
Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The upcoming earnings call will need to provide concrete updates on the Quebec project’s progress and demonstrate that the positive gross margin trend is becoming entrenched. With a market capitalization north of $4 billion, the stock’s valuation leaves little room for disappointment.
The broader hydrogen sector is sending mixed signals. Ballard Power recently delivered a strong quarter — a loss of just $0.04 per share versus expectations of $0.06, revenue up 26% to $19.4 million, and a third consecutive quarter of positive gross margin. Its stock jumped nearly 24% in a single day.
Plug Power faces a different test. The company has more revenue and a higher profile, but also a longer track record of missed expectations. Monday evening will reveal whether the Quebec contract and margin improvements mark a genuine turning point — or just another false dawn in a sector that has promised much and delivered unevenly.
