Three days before releasing second-quarter results, ServiceNow finds itself caught between two powerful currents. The company’s AI Control Tower narrative has set the bar extraordinarily high—management wants to more than double revenue in four years—while a disappointing miss from IBM last week has raised fears that corporate software budgets are being trimmed in favor of hardware investments. The collision of those forces makes Wednesday’s report after the U.S. market close one of the most consequential earnings events in the enterprise-software space this summer.

The stock closed Friday at €90.20 on the Xetra exchange, down 0.79% on the day and off 4.39% for the week. That weekly decline followed IBM’s confession: adjusted earnings of $2.93 a share on $17.2 billion in revenue, both below consensus estimates of $3.01 and $17.86 billion. The shortfall hit Workday, Salesforce and ServiceNow alike, since all three belong to the established workflow-and-applications category that IBM’s signal suggests is under budget pressure. Yet the monthly picture remains brighter: ServiceNow has still gained 8.57% over the past 30 days, a reminder of how quickly sentiment can reverse around this name.

The options market is bracing for a violent reaction. Implied volatility points to a swing of roughly 13% in either direction when the numbers land—a level the actual move has exceeded in three of the last eight earnings seasons. That kind of pricing reflects deep disagreement among investors about whether the AI monetization story will translate into hard subscription dollars. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 48.6, dead in neutral territory, leaving technical room for a move in either direction.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

Analysts have largely held their ground despite the IBM scare. The average Wall Street price target stands at €123.20, a 36.6% premium to the current share price, though individual estimates vary widely. Evercore ISI rates the stock Outperform with a $150 target, calling for disciplined execution and clear communication on growth strategy. Bernstein is more aggressive at $236, arguing ServiceNow is one of the cheapest names among mid- and large-cap software stocks. Benchmark recently lifted its price target to $130 after positive management conversations about the AI growth outlook, and Oppenheimer reaffirmed its Outperform rating with the same $130 figure.

The company itself has telegraphed confident expectations. For fiscal 2026, it projects subscription revenue of $15.735 billion to $15.775 billion, representing currency-adjusted growth of 20.5% to 21%. The second-quarter guidance calls for $3.815 billion to $3.820 billion in subscription sales, up roughly 21% to 21.5% year over year, with remaining performance obligations and current RPO both expected to expand by about 19.5%. The Zacks consensus, however, sees the quarter a touch higher at $3.92 billion, which would be a 22% jump, while the earnings-per-share estimate is $0.86.

What makes this quarter more than a routine beat-and-raise exercise is the scale of the promise. At its Knowledge conference in May, ServiceNow unveiled the AI Control Tower, a governance layer designed to orchestrate every AI agent inside a customer’s systems. Management points to the company’s own IT service desk, where an AI assistant now resolves requests 99% faster than human employees, as proof of concept. But a single reference case is a thin foundation for a plan to more than double corporate revenue—especially with Salesforce, Microsoft and Oracle all embedding generative AI into their own platforms at a breakneck pace. Management has acknowledged that competition has intensified as artificial intelligence reshapes the entire software industry.

With no major macroeconomic data scheduled before Wednesday’s release, the report itself is the sole catalyst for the week. Investors will focus on three numbers: subscription revenue growth, the remaining performance obligations, and the progress of Now Assist, the company’s AI application tier. The tone of management commentary on large-customer deals will matter as much as the headline figures—whether AI-related bookings are actually converting into dollars that justify the ambitious long-range target. If the recovery of the past month can hold and accelerate, a technical trend reversal could take hold. If ServiceNow disappoints, the selloff that marked the start of the year may return in force. The conference call is scheduled for 2 p.m. Pacific Time, 9 p.m. in Frankfurt, and the outcome will shape investor sentiment across the entire enterprise-software sector for the rest of the summer.
