Wall Street’s confidence in ServiceNow is being tested on two fronts this week. The enterprise software giant reports first-quarter earnings after the bell on Wednesday, April 22, a release that will be swiftly followed by a pivotal Financial Analyst Day in Las Vegas on May 4. This sequence of events arrives as the stock, trading around $96, languishes 46% below its level at the start of the year and well beneath its 200-day moving average of $141.

The immediate focus is the quarterly report. Analysts project earnings per share of $0.95, a 17% year-over-year increase, on revenue of approximately $3.75 billion. Management’s own subscription revenue target sits near $3.65 billion, implying currency-adjusted growth of about 19%. Yet the figures investors will scrutinize most closely are the current remaining performance obligations (cRPO), a key forward-looking metric. The company previously guided for 20% growth here, but headwinds including a partial U.S. government shutdown—which delayed public sector deals—and tough year-ago comparisons have clouded the outlook.

Beyond the headline numbers, the market seeks concrete details on ServiceNow’s artificial intelligence monetization strategy. The company’s "Now Assist" AI suite has already reached an annual contract value exceeding $600 million, with a target of $1 billion by the end of 2026. Some analysts believe ServiceNow could become the first major enterprise software firm to generate over 10% of its revenue from AI products, potentially as early as the fourth quarter of this year. Investors also await an update on the company’s ongoing $5 billion share repurchase program.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

This earnings release follows a wave of analyst caution. In the days leading up to the report, multiple firms significantly reduced their price targets while largely maintaining bullish ratings. Citigroup cut its target to $177 from $237, Deutsche Bank to $135, and Baird to $125. Capital One Financial lowered its target to $113 from $158, and RBC trimmed theirs to $121. The consensus among 44 analysts remains a "Moderate Buy," with an average price target of $173, but the recent adjustments reflect heightened near-term uncertainty.

The core of that uncertainty is a strategic dilemma. ServiceNow, like its SaaS peers, has built a lucrative model on per-user licenses. The rise of autonomous AI agents capable of handling complex workflows without human intervention threatens to undermine that established pricing structure. While ServiceNow is aggressively embedding AI across its platform with tools like "Workflow Data Fabric," investors fear the new technology could compress industry margins and cannibalize the existing business. The upcoming Analyst Day is where management must lay out a detailed roadmap to monetize these autonomous features without eroding its core.

The options market is pricing in a potential stock move of roughly 11% in either direction following the earnings announcement. For now, the company’s full-year guidance remains unchanged, calling for subscription revenues between $15.53 billion and $15.57 billion, an operating margin around 32%, and a free cash flow margin of approximately 36%. Whether that outlook is reaffirmed or adjusted on Wednesday will set the immediate tone, but the true test of ServiceNow’s AI narrative will unfold on the stage in Las Vegas two weeks later.
