The fallout from a January kidnapping at Vizsla Silver Corp.'s Panuco project in Concordia, Mexico, has deepened with the confirmation of seven fatalities. Three months after ten workers were abducted on January 23, the company has verified the deaths of seven individuals, following an earlier confirmation of two additional fatalities in early March. Three employees remain missing.

Legal Focus Turns to Company Operations

Mexican federal authorities attribute the murders to a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel known as "Los Chapitos," led by the sons of former cartel leader Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. Law enforcement has already apprehended four suspects in connection with the crimes.

The tragedy is now triggering legal repercussions for Vizsla Silver itself. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the federal attorney general's office is investigating whether the mining company bears any shared responsibility for the abductions. According to accounts from three former Panuco project employees, management allegedly reassured the workforce in 2025 that arrangements were in place with armed groups, despite a deteriorating security situation. Vizsla Silver has denied these claims, stating it has neither received threats nor made any protection payments.

Operations Halted Amid Permit Uncertainty

All site activity remains suspended, presenting a significant challenge for the company. Prior to this crisis, the Panuco asset was considered one of the world's most promising silver development projects. Its projected net present value stands at $1.8 billion, with an estimated annual output exceeding 20 million ounces of silver during its first five years of operation.

The suspension comes at a critical juncture. The final major authorization required before construction can begin—the key environmental permit (MIA)—is anticipated by mid-2026. Without it, the planned production start in the second half of 2027 will be delayed. The conditions for, or even the possibility of, resuming work in Concordia are currently unclear.

Share Price Reflects Mounting Concerns

The ongoing crisis has left a pronounced mark on Vizsla Silver's market valuation. Since the start of the year, the share price has declined by approximately 46%, trading well below its 52-week high of $6.86. The stock on the Toronto Stock Exchange fell as much as 4.6% in a single session following the early March confirmation of the two additional deaths.

CEO Michael Konnert has reiterated the company's long-term confidence in the Panuco project and emphasized support for the affected families. The fundamental market outlook for silver producers remains robust, with the global silver market expected to record a deficit for a sixth consecutive year in 2026, estimated at roughly 67 million ounces. However, for Vizsla Silver to capitalize on this potential, the restoration of secure operating conditions in Concordia is an imperative prerequisite. With three workers still missing and investigations ongoing, that outcome remains an open question.
