The SAP Sapphire Madrid event this week is providing a platform for the company to detail how artificial intelligence will reshape its enterprise software, yet the stock's recent bounce is already testing technical limits. On Wednesday, the shares closed between €154.10 and €154.26 depending on the data feed, down 0.52% on the day after a sharp Tuesday surge. The recovery over the trailing seven days amounts to 11.98% (or 9.20% on a weekly comparison), but the longer-term picture remains under pressure: SAP has shed 23.63% to 23.71% since the start of the year and 41.62% to 41.87% over the past twelve months.

At the heart of the Madrid agenda is Joule Work, a new interface intended to serve as the command center for business users. Instead of navigating multiple applications, employees describe the desired business outcome, and the system coordinates workflows, data, and AI agents to execute the task. A desktop app and web client are already available through an early-adopter program, with general availability set for later this year. The mobile version, an evolution of SAP Mobile Start, is already generally deployed. SAP also announced that agent-to-agent interoperability – allowing third-party agents to work securely with SAP's Joule agents – will reach general availability in the fourth quarter.

Joule Work sits within the broader Autonomous Suite, which spans five interconnected domains: finance, spend management, supply chain, human capital management, and customer experience. The suite is designed to break down departmental silos and data fragmentation. More than 50 domain-specific Joule assistants will orchestrate over 200 specialized agents, representing a significant deepening of SAP's AI integration into its core software stack.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

The stock's recent technical picture has brightened enough to draw attention. Shares have reclaimed the short-term moving average at €150.35, currently trading 2.49% above that level. However, the intermediate-term average sits at €167.48 and the long-term trendline at €194.18, signalling a substantial gap before a full trend reversal can be confirmed. The relative strength index stands at 92.7, deep in overbought territory, raising the likelihood of profit-taking in the near term.

The broader market context has helped. Tuesday's rally was part of a rotation within the technology sector favoring software names with predictable revenue streams, with Nemetschek and Atoss Software also gaining while hardware plays such as Infineon and Siemens Energy retreated. SAP, as a heavyweight in the German DAX index, benefited from this shift, though the index itself posted only moderate gains.

Sapphire Madrid runs through Thursday with presentations from CEO Christian Klein and other executives, but the market is looking past product roadmaps to measurable outcomes. The existing cloud business provides the benchmark: the current cloud backlog stood at €21.9 billion in the most recent quarter, up 20% year on year (or 25% on a currency-adjusted basis). Solid, certainly, but not enough to justify a long-run re-rating without evidence that AI features are translating into higher cloud consumption and customer retention.

The next key milestones are the broad availability of Joule Work in the coming months and the agent-to-agent interoperability release in the fourth quarter. If those deliveries produce a visible lift in cloud demand, the AI narrative gains operational substance. If not, the recent bounce will look like a technical dead-cat bounce rather than the start of a sustainable recovery. For now, the short-term moving average at €150.35 is the critical line in the sand – holding above it keeps the rebound alive, while a break below would erase the chart progress.
