Investors in SAP SE are navigating a complex confluence of events this April, with a critical security update landing just as the software giant's stock languishes near yearly lows ahead of pivotal quarterly results. The company faces a dual test: reassuring enterprise clients on platform integrity while convincing the market that its ambitious cloud and AI growth targets remain on track.

The immediate operational priority is a severe security vulnerability disclosed on the company's April patch day. The flaw, identified as CVE-2026-27681 and carrying a near-maximum CVSS score of 9.9, is an SQL injection weakness within the ABAP programs of Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC) and Business Warehouse (BW). It allows a low-privilege user to upload a file containing arbitrary SQL commands, which the system then executes. The potential for data theft, report manipulation, and database corruption is significant. SAP has issued Security Note 3719353 to fully deactivate the executable code in the affected program.

This was not the only concern addressed. Another notable patch, CVE-2026-34256, fixes a missing authorization check in SAP ERP and S/4HANA that could let attackers execute or overwrite ABAP programs. In total, the April update included 22 security notes: one HotNews note, two high-priority notes, and 16 medium-priority fixes. While SAP reports no known active exploitation of these vulnerabilities, the severity mandates swift customer action.

These security matters, however critical for IT departments, are unfolding against a stark backdrop for shareholders. The stock recently plunged to a 52-week low of €139.12 on April 10 and, despite a modest recovery to around €149, remains nearly 35% down year-to-date and roughly 45% below its annual peak. This places it far below its 200-day moving average of over €205, deep in correction territory.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

All eyes are now fixed on April 23, when SAP will release its first-quarter 2026 financial results after market close at 22:05 CEST, followed by an analyst conference call at 23:00. The numbers are seen as a crucial verdict on whether the recent share price collapse was justified or an overreaction. While total revenue is anticipated to be around €9.56 billion, the focal point for analysts will be the "Current Cloud Backlog." This metric, representing contractually secured future cloud revenue, is viewed as a direct barometer of whether businesses are proceeding with or delaying AI-driven ERP investments.

Market anxiety has centered on whether generative AI could destabilize SAP's traditional ERP model. CEO Christian Klein has acknowledged the AI transformation could be as demanding as the earlier shift to the cloud. For the full year 2026, SAP is targeting currency-adjusted cloud revenue growth of 23% to 25%; the upcoming report will indicate if that corridor still holds. The growth rate for the Cloud ERP suite, which was last reported at 28%, is another figure under intense scrutiny.

In an effort to support the share price, the company is executing a share buyback program of up to €10 billion, with approximately €2.6 billion already deployed by mid-April. Shareholders will also vote on a proposed dividend of €2.50 per share for 2025 at the virtual Annual General Meeting on May 5.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The historically low forward price-to-earnings ratio of around 16.6 for 2027 is attracting value-oriented investors. Their bet hinges on the growth narrative staying intact and the market having overestimated the risks posed by AI disruption. For SAP, the week ahead represents a multifaceted challenge: demonstrating robust operational security to its global customer base while delivering financial evidence that its strategic growth engine remains powerful.
