SAP shares closed at EUR 153.40 last Friday, marking a solid daily gain and extending a recent rebound. This price represents a critical juncture for the software giant, sitting just above the psychologically important EUR 150 level yet still down roughly 24% since the start of the year. The stock had plunged to a new 52-week low of around EUR 139 on April 10, meaning it has recovered more than 10% from that trough. The broader picture remains stark: from a 52-week high near EUR 271.60 last June, the equity has lost over 43% of its value.

All eyes are now on Thursday, April 23, when SAP releases its first-quarter results after the U.S. market close. The primary focus will be the performance of its cloud business, specifically whether its cloud backlog continues to expand. Analysts have flagged concerns about a potential slowdown in cloud conversions, with Piper Sandler recently downgrading the stock to "Neutral," a move that contributed to recent pressure. Beyond the raw Q1 figures, the forward-looking commentary from CEO Christian Klein and CFO Dominik Asam during the post-release analyst conference will likely be the key market driver.

The company is not standing still operationally. In mid-April, SAP announced a deep integration of generative artificial intelligence directly into its sales portfolio. The strategy embeds new AI functionalities into core systems for sales and service, aiming for seamless workflow integration rather than adding the technology as a separate layer. This move is designed to boost customer adoption of SAP's own AI solutions. Furthermore, starting in July 2026, the group plans to shift its AI services to consumption-based billing models—a structural change set to redefine its revenue development medium-term.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Simultaneously, shareholder returns are coming into view. For the 2025 fiscal year, the board has proposed a dividend of EUR 2.50 per share, an increase of EUR 0.15 from the prior year. Estimates for the current period suggest a slight rise to EUR 2.67. A virtual Annual General Meeting is scheduled for May 5, 2026, to vote on the proposal, with the ex-dividend date set for May 6 and payment planned for May 8. While these are solid signals, the resulting dividend yield at the current share price is considered too low to act as a major catalyst for institutional buyers.

Analyst sentiment remains mixed, reflecting the uncertain environment. While Jefferies maintains a buy recommendation, JPMorgan recently cut its price target to EUR 175, citing competitive pressures in the cloud and AI segments. The market is also weighing the impact of SAP's announced acquisition of data specialist Reltio in March, with investors keen to understand if integration costs will affect the annual outlook.

With an annualized volatility of 32%, the stock is far from calm. The immediate technical target for the ongoing recovery is the 50-day moving average, situated just below EUR 161. Whether SAP can sustain its upward momentum depends heavily on the cloud narrative and AI strategy it delivers this week.
