Streaming Segment Posts Strong Gains

Recent financial data from parent company Bertelsmann highlights the accelerating shift toward digital. The streaming business has emerged as a primary growth engine. By the end of 2025, the number of paying subscribers surged by 19 percent, reaching 8.1 million. Concurrently, streaming revenues saw a substantial 26 percent increase, totaling 509 million euros. Company leadership remains committed to steering this division to profitability by the close of 2026, positioning it as a core pillar for long-term expansion.

Regulatory Hurdles for Sky Deutschland Acquisition

A key component of RTL's broader strategy faces scrutiny in Brussels. The European Commission confirmed it has received new concessions from RTL to address antitrust concerns related to its proposed acquisition of Sky Deutschland. This development has automatically extended the regulator's provisional decision deadline to April 22, 2026. Industry sources indicate the media conglomerate is considering outsourcing the sale of advertising slots to third parties, a move designed to prevent excessive market concentration. Valued at up to 527 million euros, the purchase of Sky is viewed as crucial for securing premium sports rights, such as those for the Bundesliga, to bolster its competitive stance.

Operational Tweaks and Market Performance

Alongside major strategic moves, RTL is also refining its traditional linear television offerings. In the Netherlands, the format "RTL Tonight," launched only at the end of 2025, will be discontinued in June following poor ratings. Such rapid programming adjustments underscore the intense pressure to maintain viewer loyalty in a fiercely competitive landscape. Investors have responded favorably to the company's decisive restructuring efforts. RTL shares advanced 5.74 percent over the weekly period, closing at 36.85 euros on Monday.
