The British engineering giant Rolls-Royce has unveiled its most robust financial performance in recent memory for 2025, simultaneously announcing a multi-billion pound share repurchase initiative. However, this impressive display of financial health is being scrutinized against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions that threaten future growth.

A Transformation Cemented by Cash and Confidence

Rolls-Royce's operational profit surged by 41% in 2025 to reach £3.46 billion, supported by a 13% rise in revenue to £20.1 billion. This marks the fourth consecutive year the company has exceeded market expectations.

The civil aerospace division was the primary engine for growth. Its margin expanded significantly from 16.6% to 20.5%, fueled by heightened profitability in aftermarket services and spare parts. The defence and power systems units also contributed solid performances.

In a powerful statement of renewed financial strength, the board sanctioned a share buyback programme valued between £7 billion and £9 billion, scheduled for the period from 2026 to 2028. An initial tranche of £2.5 billion is planned for the current year. This move follows the recent reinstatement of dividend payments in 2025 after a five-year hiatus.

Accelerated Targets and a Fortified Balance Sheet

The company's original operating margin target of 15-17% was achieved three years ahead of schedule. Management has consequently set more ambitious goals: by 2028, operating profit is projected to hit £4.9-5.2 billion, with free cash flow expected to reach £5.0-5.3 billion.

For the upcoming year, 2026, guidance forecasts operating profit of £4.0-4.2 billion and free cash flow between £3.6 and £3.8 billion. The financial turnaround is further highlighted by the balance sheet, where a net debt of £475 million from the previous year has been transformed into a net cash position of £1.9 billion.

The Shadow of Global Uncertainty

Despite the stellar results, the outlook is not without significant headwinds. Persistent geopolitical conflicts pose a substantial risk, as they could lead to a material reduction in global civil aviation flight hours. This directly impacts Rolls-Royce's core revenue model, which is heavily reliant on engine service and maintenance contracts rather than initial sales.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rolls-Royce?

Uncertainty also lingers in the defence sector. Rolls-Royce is set to supply engines for the UK-Italy-Japan fighter jet programme, while the competing German-French project faces instability. Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgiç has publicly stated that German participation in the British-led initiative would be beneficial for the company.

Pursuing Growth Beyond the Core

Alongside its traditional businesses, Rolls-Royce is cultivating new avenues for expansion. Its New Markets segment is focusing on the development of small modular reactors and electrical power solutions—areas of growing importance, particularly for energy-intensive AI data centres. The company has also launched an AI platform named AiRR, designed for application in engineering development, maintenance operations, and supply chain management.

Furthermore, CEO Erginbilgiç has indicated the potential for Rolls-Royce to enter the market for engines powering narrow-body aircraft, a segment where it currently has no presence.

Share Price Momentum Faces a Test

The equity has appreciated by approximately 10% since the start of the year and currently trades well above its 200-day moving average. Whether this positive momentum can be sustained will largely depend on developments in the civil aviation sector and the evolving European defence landscape in the coming weeks. An imminent shareholder vote to formally approve the extensive buyback programme represents another critical milestone in the company's ongoing transformation journey.
