Away from its core jet engine operations, British industrial giant Rolls-Royce has achieved a significant regulatory milestone. The UK government has granted a crucial initial approval for the company's design of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This step forward bolsters the firm's long-term infrastructure strategy, which is concurrently supported by robust financial performance in its primary business segments.

The government's formal assessment concluded that the potential economic and societal benefits of the Rolls-Royce SMR concept outweigh any possible health risks. This marks the first time any SMR design has received such an endorsement in the UK. While this is not a final construction license for a specific site, it provides the essential political and regulatory foundation required to legally deploy the new nuclear technology across the country. The project is currently undergoing the third and final phase of the national generic design assessment.

Strong Core Business Fuels Strategic Moves

This progress in the nuclear sector coincides with a period of considerable financial strength for the conglomerate. For the full year 2025, Rolls-Royce reported a 41 percent increase in underlying operating profit to £3.46 billion. The company also generated a free cash flow of £3.3 billion. Its civil aerospace division showed particular improvement, with margins expanding from 16.6 percent to 20.5 percent.

Shareholders are benefiting directly from this operational momentum. Alongside a total dividend of 9.5 pence per share for 2025, the company has initiated a share buyback program valued at £2.5 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rolls-Royce?

The combination of a thriving core business and the pursuit of new energy markets offers Rolls-Royce stability, even as the broader civil aviation industry navigates ongoing geopolitical volatility. This dual-track strategy is reflected in the equity's solid long-term performance, with the stock gaining approximately 45 percent over a one-year period. Following some modest profit-taking in recent sessions, shares closed at €14.44 on Wednesday, trading just below their 50-day moving average.

With this foundational regulatory approval now secured for its mini-reactors, Rolls-Royce has overcome a major obstacle for future infrastructure projects in its home market. The ongoing final design review will subsequently determine the detailed timeline for the commercial implementation of its nuclear strategy.
