Rocket Lab USA finds itself at a pivotal juncture. While the company is on the verge of finalizing a major acquisition and has secured its largest-ever defense contract, Wall Street analysts remain divided on whether the current share price fully accounts for these developments.

Record Defense Contract and Commercial Momentum

In a significant boost to its launch manifest, Rocket Lab recently signed a $190 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense for 20 hypersonic test missions under the MACH-TB 2.0 program. This single award represents the largest in the company's history and expands its total planned mission roster to over 70 flights.

Commercial demand is also accelerating sharply. During the first quarter of 2026, the company sold 28 launches—a figure that nearly matches its total for the entire 2025 fiscal year. Rocket Lab's total backlog now stands at $1.85 billion. For the 2025 fiscal year, the company reported revenue of $602 million, marking a 38% year-over-year increase.

Mynaric Acquisition Clears Final Hurdle

A key strategic move is nearing completion. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has granted approval under foreign trade law for Rocket Lab's acquisition of Mynaric, a specialist in laser communications technology. This clearance paves the way for a deal closure in mid-April 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?

The transaction, valued at approximately $150 million, faced months of uncertainty and political scrutiny in Germany over the sale of sensitive aerospace technology abroad. The process was simplified only after Rheinmetall withdrew its competing bid in mid-March.

Strategically, the purchase brings critical technology in-house. Mynaric is already the supplier of optical communication terminals for Rocket Lab's $1.3 billion contract with the U.S. Space Development Agency. Furthermore, the deal establishes Rocket Lab's first European operational base, providing essential access to contracts from the European Space Agency (ESA) and European defense programs, from which it was previously effectively excluded.

Divergent Views from Market Analysts

The operational momentum has sparked a debate on fair valuation. Wells Fargo initiated coverage with a Hold rating and a $60 price target. While acknowledging Rocket Lab's position as the clear number two in the launch market, the bank sees a balanced risk-reward profile at current levels. It also cautioned that potential delays in the Neutron rocket program could create downward pressure on the stock.

A more bullish stance comes from Roth MKM. Analyst Sujeeva De Silva reaffirmed a Buy recommendation with a $90 price target, citing the successful diversification into satellite components and the expanding order backlog as evidence of substantial growth potential.

Rocket Lab USA at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The consensus view on TipRanks, which aggregates nine Buy and five Hold recommendations, yields an average 12-month price target of $86.92. This represents a potential upside of roughly 33% from last Friday's closing price of $67.52.

The Execution Phase Begins

With the Mynaric integration imminent and the hypersonic program secured, Rocket Lab is entering a phase where execution is paramount. The company aims to scale Mynaric's manufacturing capabilities and stabilize the supply chain for optical terminals. Management is targeting profitability by 2027, though ongoing losses remain a point of criticism until then. The pace of integration and the Neutron program's adherence to its timeline will likely be decisive factors in determining whether the share price can meet elevated analyst expectations.
