Rocket Lab USA is solidifying its role as a key contractor for U.S. national security space initiatives. A rapid succession of hypersonic test missions highlights this strategic pivot, with the company preparing for its fourth such launch in under six months?a pace underscoring the growing reliance on government contracts for growth.

The company?s launch cadence remains aggressive. It successfully completed 21 missions in 2025, maintaining a 100% success rate. This operational consistency extends beyond its workhorse Electron rocket; recent weeks saw two Electron launches within an eight-day period, including the deployment of a South Korean Earth observation satellite on January 30.

Financially, the strategic shift is bearing fruit. According to a February 15 analysis by Simply Wall St., Rocket Lab?s backlog has swelled to over $500 million. This represents a substantial 56% year-over-year increase. A cornerstone of this growth is a major $816 million contract awarded in December 2025 to build 18 satellites with advanced sensors for missile warning, tracking, and defense for the U.S. Space Development Agency.

Hypersonic Testing Takes Center Stage

The upcoming "Cassowary Vex" mission, announced on February 12 for the Defense Innovation Unit, exemplifies this defense focus. Scheduled for liftoff no earlier than late February from Launch Complex 2 on Wallops Island, Virginia, the mission will utilize Rocket Lab?s HASTE (Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron) vehicle. Its payload will be the DART AE scramjet aircraft, developed by Australian firm Hypersonix.

The HASTE platform is designed for test flights reaching speeds up to Mach 20. It offers government clients precise control over flight profiles and environmental conditions, a critical capability in the accelerated development cycle for next-generation hypersonic weaponry and countermeasures.

Share Price Exhibits Significant Swings

Investor sentiment has reflected both the company?s operational successes and its challenges. Trading on February 15 was volatile, with shares oscillating between $64.66 and $69.60 before closing at $67.34. This level marks a notable retreat from the 52-week high of $99.58 reached in January.

The pullback follows a strong start to the year, which saw the stock advance 14.8% in January. A primary concern for investors is the progress of the larger Neutron rocket program. In late January, a hydrostatic pressure test resulted in damage to a first-stage tank, introducing uncertainty into the development timeline. Despite this, preparations continue, with the "Hungry Hippo" payload fairing arriving at the Virginia launch site at the end of January.

The convergence of a booming defense business, a packed launch manifest, and the critical development phase for its Neutron rocket continues to define Rocket Lab?s investment narrative, driving both opportunity and volatility.
