Rocket Lab is no longer merely a small-launch specialist. The company has pivoted into a vertically integrated space systems house, a transformation that investors are pricing in with unusual speed. The stock hit an intraday record of $127.24 on Wednesday before closing at $124.15, a fresh all-time high. That 5.61% gain extended a rally that has seen the shares more than quintuple over the past twelve months and climb roughly 72% in the last thirty days alone.

The catalyst for the latest leg higher came from New Street Research, which initiated coverage with a "Buy" rating and placed Rocket Lab alongside SpaceX as the only two "scaled Western space platforms." Analyst Pierre Ferragu argued that the current market capitalisation reflects less than 1% of the total addressable space economy — a discount he considers unwarranted. With SpaceX still private and a potential IPO possibly due mid-year, Rocket Lab has become the de facto publicly traded proxy for the sector.

Momentum is building on concrete operational achievements. The company's backlog reached $2.2 billion, up 108% year-on-year, driven partly by 31 mission bookings in the first quarter alone — already surpassing the contract total for all of last year. Revenue for Q1 came in at $200.3 million, and management has guided for $225 million to $240 million in the current quarter. Meeting or exceeding that range will be critical to sustaining the rally; any miss would sharpen scrutiny on the premium valuation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab USA?

Defence spending has emerged as a powerful tailwind. The "Golden Dome" missile defence programme, budgeted at up to $1.2 trillion over two decades according to the Congressional Budget Office, has already tied Rocket Lab to Raytheon through the Space-Based Interceptor demonstration for the US Space Force. CEO Peter Beck highlighted the HASTE hypersonic vehicle and satellite infrastructure as key components in future defence architectures during the latest earnings call. A multi-year hypersonic test flight contract worth $190 million is already booked in the backlog.

The acquisition of Motiv Space Systems for $60 million, completed in early May, adds robotics expertise that has already flown on NASA's Perseverance Mars rover. The newly formed Rocket Lab Robotics division will supply actuators, robotic arms and specialised electronics for orbital and lunar missions. This move, combined with the integration of Mynaric’s optical terminal technology, deepens the company's control over critical supply chain components and pushes Rocket Lab further up the value chain — from pure launch provider to full-suite systems integrator.

Analysts have scrambled to raise their price targets. Needham, TD Cowen and Deutsche Bank all set 120-dollar targets with "Buy" ratings, while Cantor Fitzgerald stood at $96 with an "Overweight" call. On the technical front, the stock sits well above its 50-day moving average of $76.98, though the 30-day annualised volatility remains elevated. Trading volume slipped to 26 million shares on Wednesday, about 8 million less than the prior day — a potential sign of waning short-term buying pressure, but not yet a reversal signal. Support levels sit near $117.56 and $117.35, while the relative strength index at 60.2 suggests the stock is not yet overbought.

The next major operational milestone is the first flight of Neutron, a medium-lift rocket designed to carry up to 13,000 kilograms and compete directly with SpaceX's Falcon 9. Five Neutron missions through 2029 are already under a confidential block contract, and the debut is slated for late 2026. Until then, every quarterly delivery will test whether the company can convert a record order book into predictable revenue from launches, system sales and defence contracts — a transition that will ultimately determine whether the current valuation can be sustained.
