Rocket Lab: $1.3 Billion in New Pentagon Deals Sets Stage for Neutron's Fourth-Quarter Debut

The transformation from scrappy launch provider to full-spectrum defense contractor is accelerating at Rocket Lab faster than many on Wall Street anticipated. Late May brought a pivotal milestone: the company passed the system requirements review for the Space Development Agency's TRKT3 satellite network, unlocking an $816 million contract. Combined with earlier awards, Rocket Lab's SDA-related backlog now exceeds $1.3 billion.
The Pentagon's appetite for the company's vertical-integration model didn't stop there. The U.S. Space Force handed Rocket Lab a $90 million deal to build two satellites for geostationary orbit — a first for the firm. Each satellite will carry proprietary infrared sensors and energy-weapon countermeasures, underscoring how far the company has moved beyond simply launching small rockets.
Yet the gap between operational reality and market sentiment has rarely been wider. Rocket Lab shares tumbled nearly 12% in a single session after a Blue Origin rocket explosion fueled sector-wide fears of regulatory delays. The stock currently trades around $107 — roughly 25% below the May record, even though it remains up 323% year-to-date. That rally has invited profit-taking, with the share price now sitting above the average analyst price target of roughly $104.
The sell-off gained further momentum from a broader correction in space stocks. Intuitive Machines plunged 15%, while Redwire and Satellogic each fell about 10%. Speculation that SpaceX's long-anticipated IPO on June 12 will suck capital out of smaller players added to the jitters.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?
Insider activity has compounded the pressure. Over the past three months, Rocket Lab executives have liquidated between $63.3 million and $67.7 million in stock. Just on June 3, four top managers sold shares: CFO Adam Spice transferred 188,172 shares to trusts and sold 62,744 at $142.57; SVP Kampani unloaded 70,000 shares at $145.13; and Director Edward Frank moved 182,746 shares into trusts. The pattern has rattled retail investors, even though insider sales at these levels often accompany routine tax or estate planning.
Analysts, however, remain bullish. Clear Street's Greg Pendy lifted his price target to $129 from $98 on June 3, maintaining a Buy rating. He expects launch-capacity tightness across the industry to drive accelerated growth through 2030. Seeking Alpha went further on June 4, issuing a Strong Buy with a $173 target, citing a book-to-bill ratio of 2.86 and net cash of roughly $1.3 billion.
The fundamental numbers back the optimism. First-quarter 2026 revenue hit $200.35 million, a 63.4% jump from a year earlier and slightly above the $189.65 million consensus. The net loss per share held at $0.07, in line with expectations. The total backlog swelled to $2.22 billion, providing multi-year revenue visibility.
Rocket Lab at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
All eyes now turn to the Neutron rocket, Rocket Lab's bid to capture the medium-to-heavy payload market. The company has filed launch license applications with the FAA, with the window opening July 1. Management targets the first flight in the fourth quarter, and the vehicle already has five launch contracts secured. A cash cushion of more than $2 billion ensures development won't be starved by short-term volatility.
CEO Peter Beck has set a clear metric for progress: the appearance of major Neutron components on test stands. When that happens, the fourth-quarter deadline will shift from aspirational to tangible. Until then, the stock will likely remain hostage to sector sentiment and the looming SpaceX debut — but the defense backlog and Neutron's prospects offer a powerful counterweight.
