Rio Tinto's Strategic Pivot: From Diamonds to Critical Minerals

Rio Tinto completes strategic pivot, exiting diamonds to launch a $500M copper drill program and secure $1.2B for its Argentina lithium project, focusing on energy transition materials.

Mining giant Rio Tinto has completed a decisive strategic shift, exiting the diamond business after more than two decades to channel hundreds of millions of dollars into copper, lithium, and gallium projects. This move represents a full-scale realignment of its portfolio toward materials essential for the energy transition, marking a departure from historical sidelines.

A Legal Victory and a Half-Billion Dollar Drill Program

Concurrent with its diamond exit, the company secured a significant legal victory in the United States. An appeals court cleared the path for a land exchange in Arizona, granting a joint venture with BHP access to an area estimated to contain over 40 billion pounds of copper. Rio Tinto is now launching a $500 million drilling program there to advance the Resolution Copper project. This future mine is projected to supply more than a quarter of U.S. copper demand and is considered a strategic component for domestic supply chains.

The final chapter of the diamond era closed on March 26, 2026, with the cessation of production at the Diavik mine in Canada. This shutdown concludes the company's last remaining diamond operation following the depletion of economically viable reserves. Previous exits had already occurred from mines in Zimbabwe and Australia.

Billion-Dollar Bet on Battery Materials

The strategic overhaul extends well beyond copper. For its Rincon lithium project in Argentina, Rio Tinto secured a financing package worth $1.175 billion from four international lenders. The planned facility is expected to deliver approximately 60,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually starting in 2028. An initial commercial shipment of 200 tonnes from an existing pilot plant has already been dispatched from the port of Buenos Aires to Shanghai.

Furthermore, the company is expanding its footprint in specialty metals. With government support, a pilot plant for gallium production is under construction in Saguenay, Canada, slated for commissioning in 2027. With a planned annual capacity of 40 tonnes, Rio Tinto could eventually supply around five percent of global production, positioning itself as the first major producer outside Asia.

Investors have responded favorably to this sharpened focus on electrification and renewable energy infrastructure. Since the start of the year, Rio Tinto shares have posted a solid gain of over 16 percent, closing at €80.61 on Tuesday.
