Apex Critical Metals, the Canada-based explorer, has obtained a key drilling permit for its Rift project in Nebraska, sending the stock up more than 20% in early trading on Monday. After years of groundwork, the company can move forward with planned drilling activities.

The authorization comes from the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment and covers roughly 1,400 hectares within the Elk Creek Carbonatite Complex. The area is geologically considered highly prospective for Rare Earth Elements and Niobium—commodities in strong demand for electric-vehicle technology and defense applications.

With the permit secured, Apex announced that drilling is slated to begin in the first half of the first quarter of 2026. Preparations are underway, delivering tangible near-term catalysts for investors.

Historic data bolster optimism

The Rift project is not without prior work. Earlier drill programs conducted by Molycorp (1973–1986) and Quantum (2010–2011) yielded notable results:

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Apex Critical Metals?

  • 155.5 meters at 2.70% REO, including a high-grade core of 54.9 meters at 3.30% REO
  • 236.2 meters at 2.10% REO

These historical figures underpin current enthusiasm. Apex’s CEO, Sean Charland, called the milestone a “significant step” for the company, a description many may consider understated given the data.

Location as a strategic edge

The timing aligns with a broader push to domesticize critical supply chains in North America in early 2026. Apex’s Nebraska project is located within the United States, offering a clear advantage over explorers operating in regions with greater political risk.

Next milestones are clearly defined: mobilization of the drilling rig, an official drill start, and later in the year, initial core observations and laboratory results. Whether Apex can confirm or exceed the historic high-grade numbers will influence the stock’s trajectory as the project progresses.
