Strategic Partnership with Spain Highlights Growth Trajectory

Amid the controversy, the company continues to execute its growth strategy. Last Friday, Rheinmetall signed a letter of intent with Spanish technology firm Indra to establish a joint venture. The partnership aims to secure bids from the Spanish armed forces for up to 3,000 military trucks and several hundred armored vehicles. This potential contract carries a value in the billions of euros and is expected to create between 500 and 700 jobs in Spain.

This move aligns with the group's impressive expansion pace. Rheinmetall increased its revenue by 29 percent to €9.9 billion in 2025. Management is targeting sales of €14.0 to €14.5 billion for 2026, with an operating margin of approximately 19 percent.

The source of the recent tension stems from an interview published in The Atlantic magazine. In it, CEO Armin Papperger dismissed the innovative capacity of Ukraine's defense industry, comparing local drone manufacturers to "housewives producing parts with 3D printers in their kitchens."

The reaction from Kyiv was swift. Presidential advisor Alexander Kamyschin strongly rebutted the assessment, pointing to the proven effectiveness of Ukrainian drone systems. Faced with the escalating diplomatic friction, Rheinmetall issued a public statement on Sunday via the social media platform X, asserting its "highest respect" for Ukraine's defense efforts in an attempt at real-time damage control.

Market Performance Reflects Mixed Sentiment

The equity market is reflecting this complex situation. Rheinmetall shares are currently trading at €1,369.50, a level significantly below its September peak of €1,995.00. Since the start of the year, the stock has declined by roughly 14.5 percent and sits nearly 20 percent below its 200-day moving average.
