Rheinmetall shares traded near €1,518 on Wednesday, a level that underscores a significant market disconnect. Despite two major strategic announcements this week, the stock remains roughly 25% below its September 2025 peak of €1,995 and has shed over 6% year-to-date. This cautious investor stance sets a high bar for the company’s upcoming quarterly report.

The German defense group has simultaneously unlocked a critical new market and forged a path in a high-margin weapons segment. Its U.S. subsidiary, American Rheinmetall, has achieved Level 2 certification under the Pentagon's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program. This formal approval, covering six production sites in Maine, Michigan, and Ohio, meets 110 specific U.S. Department of Defense cybersecurity requirements. It grants Rheinmetall the previously missing credential to compete for classified and security-relevant contracts with the U.S. military, fundamentally expanding its transatlantic business potential.

Parallel to this milestone, the company has sealed a strategic European partnership. Rheinmetall announced the formation of "Rheinmetall Destinus Strike Systems," a joint venture with Dutch defense firm Destinus. The Düsseldorf-based group will hold a 51% stake in the venture, which is slated to begin operations in the second half of 2026, pending regulatory approvals. The venture’s core mission is the development and production of cruise missiles and ballistic rocket artillery—a segment whose strategic importance has surged following the shift in Europe's security landscape.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Analysts view these moves as substantiating a bullish investment thesis. Deutsche Bank Research reiterated its "Buy" rating on the stock with a price target of €2,100. Barclays holds an even more optimistic "Overweight" stance and a €2,125 target, though it issued a broader sector warning about potentially weaker profitability at the start of the year. The focus for both firms is squarely on Rheinmetall’s first-quarter results, due on May 7. Investors will scrutinize the operating margin within the weapons and ammunition division and look for any early signals regarding order intake for the new missile joint venture.

The near-term calendar provides additional catalysts. Following the Q1 report, Rheinmetall will hold its virtual Annual General Meeting on May 12. Shareholders are set to vote on a proposed dividend of €11.50 per share, which would represent a substantial 42% increase from the previous year's €8.10 payout and mark the fourth consecutive annual raise.

For the full year 2026, management has ambitious targets, including revenue exceeding €14 billion, supported by an order backlog that could reach up to €80 billion. The upcoming quarterly figures on May 7 will offer the first concrete data point of the year to assess the feasibility of these goals and determine whether analyst price targets above €2,000 are grounded in operational momentum or mere optimism. The market’s verdict will hinge on Rheinmetall's ability to translate its strategic advances into tangible financial performance.
