Rheinmetall Expands Autonomous Arsenal with Croatian Acquisition

German defense giant Rheinmetall secures a 51% stake in Croatian unmanned vehicle specialist DOK-ING, aiming to strengthen its position in the growing military robotics market.

The German defense contractor Rheinmetall has moved to bolster its position in the unmanned systems sector through a strategic acquisition. The Düsseldorf-based group has secured a controlling stake in Croatian specialist DOK-ING, a clear move to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding market for robotic military vehicles.

Strategic Stake Secures Niche Expertise

Under the finalized transaction, Rheinmetall will hold a 51 percent majority interest in DOK-ING. The Zagreb-based firm is focused on the engineering and manufacturing of unmanned ground vehicles for defense applications. Company founder Vjekoslav Majetic will retain ownership of the remaining 49 percent.

This acquisition is designed to provide a targeted expansion of Rheinmetall’s existing portfolio of unmanned systems. By integrating DOK-ING’s specialized capabilities, the conglomerate aims to enhance its own competencies in autonomous technology—a field of growing strategic importance for modern militaries.

Share Performance and Industry Context

Rheinmetall’s shares advanced 3.7 percent on Wednesday, closing at €1,638.50. Viewed over a one-year horizon, the stock has recorded a gain of nearly 38 percent.

This corporate development occurs within a highly active period for the European defense industry. Notably, the Franco-German tank manufacturer KNDS is generating market interest with plans for an initial public offering slated for autumn 2026. Rheinmetall’s strategy, in contrast, appears focused on targeted, specialized purchases to build its technological edge. The company also maintains collaborative ties with KNDS, including involvement in the production of the Boxer armored vehicle.
