Renk Stock: A $691 Million US Army Win Offers Shelter From European Storm, But Technical Wounds Remain

The defense sector is supposed to be a safe haven, but Renk’s recent price action tells a different story. The gearbox specialist saw its shares plunge to a 52-week low of 40.41 euros in late June after Berlin scrapped the F126 frigate program. Since then, a massive US Army contract worth $691 million has sparked a sharp reversal, lifting the stock to 47.19 euros by Thursday — a 14% weekly gain.
The F126 cancellation on June 24 sent shockwaves through the supply chain, leaving Renk with an estimated one-off charge of around 20 million euros. But within days, the company announced a five-year deal to supply transmissions for US Army combat vehicles, a contract that analysts say secures factory utilization for the long term. The question now is whether this American windfall can fully offset the European setback.
Renk is doubling down on its defense orientation. The management aims to lift the defense share of revenue from 70% to 90% by 2030, with a group sales target of 2.8 to 3.2 billion euros — excluding any acquisitions. To get there, it is investing up to 325 million euros through 2028 in digitalization and new production lines, with a particular focus on drive-by-wire systems that underpin future autonomous military vehicles.
The company already operates 11 plants worldwide with 4,400 employees. Now it is expanding into India, Eastern Europe, and Italy, leveraging its strong footprint in Europe, the US, and Asia. The global arms race is filling order books, and Renk’s components are found in nearly every heavy tracked vehicle in NATO.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?
Bulls argue that Renk’s specialization makes it a rare pure-play defense investment, especially after rival KNDS reportedly shelved its IPO. The cancellation of the F126 ships may create an opening for a new German frigate order: the navy is reportedly considering the MEKO A200 class, which could generate 30 to 40 million euros in additional revenue for Renk. Compensation payments from the cancelled program could further reduce the net impact.
Technicals offer some support. The relative strength index sits at exactly 50, a neutral reading that leaves room for movement. With the stock still 47% below its all-time high of 88.73 euros, buyers see substantial recovery potential.
But bears caution that the European project risks are far from over. The F126 stoppage highlights how cost overruns and political U-turns can derail even well-funded programs. If the cancellation wave spreads, the naval order pipeline could dry up. On the chart, the stock remains below its 50-day moving average of 48.97 euros and the 100-day line at 52.10 euros. Without a breakout above these levels, a retest of the lows is possible.
Renk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The wide 54% volatility range underscores investor nervousness. A pre-close call on July 16 should provide early clues on second-quarter performance, but the big moment comes on August 6, when Renk releases full half-year results. On the same day, Rheinmetall is expected to detail the exact cost of the F126 cancellations, which could trigger fresh selling if additional supplier cuts are revealed.
Until then, the stock is likely to trade in a band between 45 and 50 euros, waiting for a decisive signal above the 50-day average to turn technically bullish. For now, Renk remains a textbook case of the defense boom’s volatility: operational strength and strategic vision are at odds with a market that demands instant clarity.
