Redwood AI’s chemistry platform Reactosphere is getting a brain upgrade that moves it closer to the workbench. On 14 May the company unveiled an Optimization Module designed to help researchers plan experiments more efficiently, cutting down on wasted materials and iteration time. The tool combines Bayesian optimization, design of experiments and sample-size planning into a single workflow, letting teams estimate how many trials they need before they ever step into the lab.

Chief executive Louis Dron described optimisation as “one of the most iterative and resource-intensive parts of chemical development”. The module aims to turn that process into a structured, AI-guided decision loop — an approach that Redwood is pitching well beyond the pharmaceutical vertical. The company now targets materials science, specialty chemicals and even defence-related chemistry applications, betting that any lab running expensive experiments could benefit from smarter upfront planning.

That broader ambition was reinforced just days earlier. On 11 May, Innovate BC named Redwood AI one of British Columbia’s “Top 25 Investible Companies” during a showcase tied to the Web Summit Vancouver event. More than 700 investors attended the gathering, giving the company a rare platform to pitch alongside peers in AI, life sciences, cleantech and robotics. While the accolade does not translate into immediate revenue, it raises Redwood’s profile among institutional capital providers and potential industrial partners at a pivotal moment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Redwood AI?

The company also continues to deepen its academic ties. A collaboration with the University of British Columbia has expanded the evaluated reaction space from roughly 4 million to more than 21 million training examples — a 425% jump. That data growth supports the kind of predictive models that underpin Reactosphere’s new optimisation features, though the company still needs to convert technical momentum into tangible customer wins.

On the policy front, the Q-SAFE project — part of the NRC IRAP Defence Industry Assist program — is expected to launch in May. It links chemistry AI, advanced optimisation and potential quantum-hardware screening for hazardous compounds. Any early contract news or user feedback tied to the new module would provide measurable validation for the current product push.

The market has already priced in a good deal of optimism. Redwood AI shares closed at ?5.86 last Friday, up 27.67% over the trailing month. Yet the relative strength index sits at 95.9, deep in overbought territory, and the 30-day annualised volatility of 67% underscores how skittish the move has become. The story is gaining substance, but without near-term commercial signals the elevated valuation may prove hard to defend.
