The VanEck Rare Earth ETF has delivered a blistering 116% gain over the past twelve months, with some calculations even pushing that figure past the 118% mark. Yet the fund is now wrestling with a bout of volatility that has knocked its price as low as 14.50 euros, after it recently traded at 14.66 euros. The culprit is a one-two punch from two of its largest holdings — MP Materials and USA Rare Earth — each grappling with distinct but equally unsettling threats.

MP Materials, the fund's top position, was placed on a Chinese export blacklist at the end of June. The move restricts the company's access to critical technology and has sent its shares tumbling by a double-digit percentage. While MP Materials does not rely directly on Chinese customers for revenue, its supply chain is deeply entwined with China's dominance in rare earth processing and equipment manufacturing. Any disruption to key suppliers could ripple through its operations, even as the company itself posted a 49% jump in first-quarter revenue and record production volumes in its materials segment.

USA Rare Earth, the ETF's second-largest holding, faces an even more tangled set of problems. Its stock crashed 23% in June, driven by a toxic mix of the same Chinese blacklist, an unresolved legal dispute, and a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that signals a potential sale of nearly 94 million shares — equivalent to more than 35% of the company's outstanding equity. The prospect of massive dilution has spooked investors, adding to the selling pressure that has weighed on the entire fund.

The convergence of these company-specific shocks has pushed the ETF's 30-day volatility north of 42%, while its relative strength index has slipped to 36 — approaching oversold territory. The fund has fallen decisively below its 50-day moving average, though it continues to hold just above the longer-term 200-day line at 14.37 euros. Holding that support would preserve the broader uptrend that has been intact for months.

The landscape is shifting in other ways as well. The VanEck fund, with 2.7 billion dollars in assets, remains the dominant vehicle in the rare earth space, bundling heavyweights like MP Materials, Albemarle, and Lynas. But a new rival — the Sprott Rare Earths Ex-China ETF — launched in mid-April and explicitly excludes Chinese stocks, offering a political risk hedge that VanEck's broader approach cannot match. That leaves the incumbent vulnerable not only to geopolitical crossfire from Beijing but also to the kind of company-specific meltdowns now playing out.

Chart watchers see a critical juncture ahead. For MP Materials, a breakout above the 56-to-60-dollar resistance zone would restore confidence; failure could trigger a retest of the 50-dollar level. For the ETF, the immediate test is whether the 200-day moving average can hold. Buyers have so far stepped in at that threshold, but the dual weight of Chinese sanctions and a looming dilution overhang will demand sustained conviction to reverse the recent slide.
