Rangnick's Milan Stalemate, Haugen's Legal Limbo, and a Five-Million-Euro Defender: German Football's Summer of Contrasts

Ralf Rangnick will not be heading to Serie A after all. Discussions with AC Milan over the post of technical director collapsed on Friday, after the 66-year-old demanded sweeping control over the coaching staff and all personnel decisions. The Italian club's owners let his ultimatum expire without a response, ending a saga that had drawn attention from both sides of the Alps.
While top-flight managers haggle over authority, German clubs are quietly locking up young talent. The 1. FC Köln made the biggest splash of the week, turning Jahmai Simpson-Pusey's loan from Manchester City into a permanent move. The centre-back signed a contract running until 2030, with a transfer fee of around five million euros. FSV Mainz 05 also dug deep, paying over three million euros plus performance bonuses to bring Fabio Gruber north from 1. FC Nürnberg. His deal, too, runs to 2030. Bayer Leverkusen secured youth prospect Kennet Eichhorn with a release clause set at roughly nine million euros – a clear bet on future resale value.
Not every transfer runs smoothly. Sigurd Haugen's proposed move to 1. FC Nürnberg is stuck in neutral. Though a three-year contract has already been signed, the striker cannot join because of the unstable licensing situation at his current club, 1860 Munich. An investor there is fighting the football association's decisions in court, and until that case is resolved, the transfer cannot be completed.
Two departures went through without fuss. Alemannia Aachen and midfielder Gianluca Gaudino parted ways on Sunday for family reasons. Gaudino, who made 57 competitive appearances for Aachen since 2024, will continue his career at VfR Aalen. Over in Wiesbaden, captain Fatih Kaya left SV Wehen Wiesbaden a year before his contract ended. The striker, who joined in 2024 and developed into a key performer, is headed to Samsunspor in Turkey's Süper Lig.
The women's game provided a headline of its own. Borussia Dortmund's female team signed national goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, who arrives after seven years at Arsenal London. The 30-year-old, a Champions League winner in 2025, inked a deal through 2029. Her goal is to help BVB climb out of the Regionalliga and into the Bundesliga. Dortmund also added Lena Ostermeier and Jacqueline Meißner on free transfers from SGS Essen, strengthening a squad that is increasingly serious about promotion.
