Premium Issuance Meets Concentration Risk as Scottish Mortgage Rides SpaceX Revaluation
05.06.2026 - 03:15:36 | boerse-global.deScottish Mortgage Investment Trust’s latest share issuance at a premium to net asset value signals strong investor demand, even as the market weighs the implications of a single private company now accounting for more than a fifth of the portfolio. The trust placed 2.35 million shares at 1,516.50 pence on 1 June and a further 3.85 million shares at 1,545.42 pence the following day, both above the prevailing NAV. After the second tranche, total shares outstanding stood at roughly 1.12 billion, with 365.7 million held in treasury.
The catalyst for the elevated NAV was an upward revaluation of Scottish Mortgage’s stake in SpaceX, based on confirmation of the space company’s expected initial public offering price. The trust’s net asset value climbed to 1,493.98 pence at the close on 3 June. SpaceX now represents 21.0% of total assets, a sharp jump from 17.9% at the end of April. That concentration — a single unlisted holding exceeding one-fifth of the portfolio — is both a potential driver of future gains and a source of heightened risk.
The market’s reaction has been measured. In German trading, the stock stood at €18.00, down 0.69% on the day, though it had closed at €18.12 on Wednesday. Year to date, the shares are still up 29.55%, and the seven-day performance shows a 1.47% gain. The muted immediate response suggests investors are factoring in the concentration risk rather than blindly celebrating the NAV boost. Earlier in the week, the stock had crossed above its previous record of 15.44 pounds set in November 2021, propelled by news that Anthropic — another Scottish Mortgage holding — had filed for an IPO.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Scottish Mortgage Investment?
The premium issuance underscores that demand remains robust enough for the trust to raise capital without diluting existing holders at a discount. Yet the growing weight of SpaceX raises the question of how much further the market will allow that premium to expand. For now, Scottish Mortgage’s story is one of competing forces: a rising NAV from a single high-conviction bet, and the discipline needed to manage the resulting portfolio imbalance.
