POET Technologies has secured a milestone purchase order from Lumilens valued at $50 million, marking a pivotal shift for a company that has been operating on minimal quarterly revenue. The five-year framework agreement could eventually see Lumilens take delivery of components worth up to half a billion dollars, contingent on demand from hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure.

The initial order covers optical engines built on POET’s wafer-level optical-electrical interposer platform, a technology that replaces costly manual assembly with direct fabrication on wafer substrates. The approach is designed to boost throughput while cutting costs for large-scale data centers, precisely the markets where bandwidth bottlenecks have become acute as AI workloads expand.

New COO Takes Over Production Ramp

To ensure the factory floor can deliver on that promise, POET has installed Dr. Sandeep Kumar as its new Chief Operating Officer effective May 11, 2026. Kumar, a seasoned semiconductor executive, also joins the Board of Directors, and his compensation package includes roughly 410,000 restricted share units that vest in equal tranches over three years — a structure that ties his personal upside directly to the stock’s long-term trajectory.

His immediate mandate is to prepare the company’s manufacturing hub in Penang, Malaysia, for mass production alongside POET’s existing facility in Shenzhen. The company is targeting initial output of over 30,000 optical engines this year, a figure that would leave behind earlier order cancellations and demonstrate that the technology can scale. Future products include 800G and 1.6T pluggable transceivers, with first samples expected by the end of 2026 and volume production scheduled for 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying POET Technologies?

Warrants Link Lumilens to POET’s Share Price

POET has structured the commercial agreement to align Lumilens’ incentives with its own equity performance. Lumilens receives warrants for nearly 23 million common shares at an exercise price of $8.25. About one-tenth of those warrants are immediately exercisable; the remainder can only be exercised as Lumilens places further purchase orders, creating a direct feedback loop between sales volume and potential equity upside.

Cash Cushion and Coming Earnings

The company’s balance sheet offers a comfortable runway for the ramp. After raising an additional $150 million in January 2026, POET ended the fourth quarter of 2025 with roughly $430 million in cash. Fourth-quarter revenue was a modest $341,000, reflecting the development-phase reality. Analysts expect the upcoming first-quarter results on May 20 to show a loss per share of about five cents on revenue in the low six-figure range — figures that underscore the distance still to travel before production revenue materializes.

The stock closed at $14.37 on Wednesday, gaining 4.7% on the session, and the market capitalization now sits at approximately $2.1 billion. For short-term traders, a new leveraged ETF under the ticker POEL offers doubled exposure to the shares.

Structural Moves: Redomiciling and Tax Ease

On the corporate side, POET’s board has approved a move of the legal domicile from Canada to the United States. The company is also providing data for QEF (Qualified Electing Fund) elections to help US-based shareholders manage tax complexities tied to the company’s PFIC status for the 2025 fiscal year. These changes, combined with the operational push in Penang and the Lumilens order, give POET a set of catalysts that will test whether its technology can finally scale from prototype to production.
