Optical data transmission has become one of the most pressing bottlenecks in the AI infrastructure arms race, and POET Technologies is betting that its photonic chip platform can crack the problem. The company landed its most ambitious commercial commitment yet: a development pact with startup Lumilens that starts with a $50 million order and could scale to $500 million over five years, sending the stock up as much as 26% to $20.65.

The agreement centers on a new Electrical-Optical Interposer (EOI) architecture that eliminates the costly active alignment step in wafer-level chip production. By automating that process, POET aims to slash manufacturing costs and ramp throughput — a critical shift from conceptual development toward the kind of volume production that hyperscale data centers demand. First engineering samples are slated for the end of 2026, with series production targeted for the following year.

Lumilens, backed by venture capital firm Mayfield, is receiving warrants to purchase nearly 23 million POET shares at $8.25 apiece. About one-tenth of those warrants are immediately exercisable; the remainder vest against future revenue milestones. The technology initially targets 800G and 1.6T optical transmission speeds for AI clusters.

Revenue Growth Masks Persistent Losses

Even with the headline-grabbing deal, POET’s financial picture remains that of a pre-revenue company edging toward commercialization. First-quarter revenue came in at $503,389 — triple the $166,760 reported a year ago. Those sales stemmed largely from non-recurring engineering services and product shipments tied to its optical interposer platform.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying POET Technologies?

But the absolute revenue base is still tiny, and the cost of building that future is steep. The company posted a net loss of $12.3 million, or $0.08 per share, swinging from a net profit in the prior-year period. Research and development expenses consumed $4.5 million, stock-based compensation added $3.4 million, and depreciation totaled $1.0 million. Operating cash outflow stood at $8.8 million, roughly flat year-over-year.

Partnerships Multiply as Malaysia Factory Takes Shape

Beyond the Lumilens tie-up, POET is deepening its footprint in the AI data center ecosystem. A strategic collaboration with LITEON Technology targets next-generation optical communication modules for hyperscaler networks. Separately, the company is working with Lessengers on a 1.6T 2xDR4 optical transceiver module, designed to handle the surging bandwidth demands of large AI clusters.

Chief operating officer Sandeep Kumar is also pushing ahead with capacity expansion in Malaysia, preparing the manufacturing base needed to support eventual series production. The region is emerging as a hub for semiconductor packaging and optics assembly.

U.S. Relocation and Shareholder Vote Loom

Management has proposed moving POET’s corporate headquarters and tax domicile to the United States, a move designed to prevent the company from being classified as a Passive Foreign Investment Company, which carries unfavourable tax treatment for U.S. shareholders. Shareholders will vote on the relocation at the annual meeting scheduled for June 26.

That vote falls just three days before the deadline for a separate legal challenge. A class-action lawsuit filed against POET alleges that the company made misleading statements in April about its business outlook and financial stability. Investors will be watching both events closely — the outcome of the vote and any developments in the litigation could influence the stock’s near-term trajectory.

POET Technologies at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Volatility Amplified by Leveraged ETF

The stock’s sharp moves have attracted speculative attention. The Defiance Daily Target 2X Long POET ETF, a leveraged product launched recently, has magnified swings that were already wide. Shares traded between $13.90 and $20.65 on the day of the Lumilens announcement, and the leveraged ETF adds another layer of momentum to a name already prone to social-media-driven spikes.

For POET, the weeks ahead bring a collision of transformational alliances, operational scaling, and legal scrutiny. The Lumilens order provides the clearest signal yet that the market sees value in its manufacturing approach. But until engineering samples become delivered products and revenue turns recurrent, the heavy spending on R&D will remain the dominant story on the bottom line.
