Plug Power is making a strategic bid to supply the U.S. power grid, leveraging the artificial intelligence boom as a catalyst. The company intends to offer up to 250 megawatts of hydrogen-based energy in an upcoming auction by grid operator PJM Interconnection. This auction was initiated specifically to address the skyrocketing electricity requirements of AI data centers. For Plug Power, it represents a pivotal chance to frame hydrogen as a viable solution to a pressing national infrastructure challenge.

A Path to Profitability Amid Persistent Challenges

The company has outlined a clear commercial roadmap, supported by what it describes as a pipeline exceeding $8 billion. Its stated goals are achieving positive EBITDAS by the close of 2026, a positive operating result by the end of 2027, and full profitability by December 2028. These targets, however, are under intense scrutiny. Plug Power carries a significant accumulated deficit of $8.2 billion, faces ongoing litigation, and has repeatedly pushed back its profitability forecasts in prior years, contributing to longstanding skepticism among market analysts.

Leadership is now under Jose Luis Crespo, who assumed the CEO role on March 2, 2026. He brings over a decade of direct experience in hydrogen and fuel cells to the position, having previously served as President and Chief Revenue Officer, where he led the firm's global sales strategy.

Stabilizing Operations and Finances

Plug Power’s recent bid follows a year dedicated to stabilizing its business and balance sheet. For the 2025 fiscal year, revenue increased by 12.9% to approximately $710 million, driven largely by higher equipment sales. A notable milestone was reached in the fourth quarter of 2025: the company reported a positive gross profit of $5.5 million. This marks a substantial reversal from the $233 million gross loss recorded in the same period the year before.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Further strengthening its financial position, Plug Power sold its New York Project Gateway site to Stream Data Centers for $132.5 million. This transaction is the initial phase of a broader $275 million infrastructure optimization program slated for completion in the first half of 2026.

2026: A Pivotal Year for Validation

The coming months will be decisive for Plug Power’s grid strategy. Success in the PJM auction could lead to multi-year contracts with hyperscalers, data center operators, and utility companies. Converting its hydrogen technology into secured grid revenue would provide substantive validation for its new strategic direction. Conversely, should this initiative fail, the company’s margin for error remains narrow given its current financial standing. The outcome will be a critical test of whether the firm can successfully align its offerings with the era's most demanding energy consumers.
