Plug Power's Q1 revenue beat estimates and losses narrowed sharply, but $150M operating cash burn underscores the ongoing turnaround challenges.

Plug Power delivered a first-quarter performance that gave investors genuine cause for optimism: revenue smashed Wall Street estimates and losses narrowed sharply. Yet the hydrogen specialist still burned through $150 million in operating cash during the period, a reminder that the turnaround story is far from complete.

Revenue came in at $163.5 million, up 22% year over year and well above the consensus forecast of roughly $140 million. The adjusted net loss per share halved to just $0.08, beating expectations and marking a decisive improvement from the corresponding quarter of 2025.

The numbers were driven by broad-based growth. Electrolyser sales surged 343% from a year earlier, while material-handling revenue benefited from key customers such as Walmart and Amazon. The fuel-cell and hydrogen fuel segments also posted solid double-digit gains.

More striking was the progress on costs. The GAAP gross margin swung from negative 55% a year ago to negative 13% — a 42-percentage-point leap that reflects tight procurement discipline, higher volumes, and the initial impact of Plug Power’s internal efficiency programme, “Project Quantum Leap.” Service costs per GenDrive unit dropped more than 30%, and the margin in the hydrogen fuel business improved by 54 percentage points. Management has set a target of positive adjusted EBITDA by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Longer-term credibility rests on the electrolyser pipeline, which now tops $8 billion. The company recently landed a 275-megawatt order from Hy2gen for the Courant project in North America, a facility designed to produce decarbonised ammonium nitrate for the mining sector. Other live projects include a 100 MW system with Galp Energia in Portugal and a joint 25 MW venture in Spain with Iberdrola and BP. Globally, Plug Power has installed more than 320 MW of electrolyser capacity.

The strong operational data prompted a flurry of analyst upgrades. Susquehanna lifted its price target from $2.75 to $3.75, Canaccord Genuity raised from $2.50 to $4, and TD Cowen moved from $2 to $3. B. Riley hiked its target to $5, Clear Street went to $4, and H.C. Wainwright stood out with a $7 target while reiterating its buy rating. The market notice was clear: the company is making tangible progress, but no one is issuing a blank cheque yet.

The share price has already reflected that cautious enthusiasm. In euro terms, the stock closed Friday at €3.25, down slightly on the day but up roughly 23% on the week. Since the start of 2026, it has gained about 71%, and over twelve months the advance exceeds 400%.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The biggest headwind remains cash. Total liquidity stood at $802 million, though only $223 million is freely available; the rest is restricted but due to be released gradually over the coming years. Plug Power burned $150 million in operating cash during the first quarter, and cumulative losses have reached $8.2 billion. To shore up its finances, the company plans to monetise hydrogen project assets worth around $275 million. The first transaction, targeting about $142 million, is expected to close in June. Separately, the sale of tax credits should bring in nearly $40 million by the end of May.

If those non-dilutive cash injections come through and operating losses continue to shrink, Plug Power may just be able to hit its Q4 EBITDA goal before the current liquidity cushion runs thin. The next test will not be another analyst target — it will be whether the company can turn that narrative into hard numbers.
