Plug Power's Q1 revenue surged 22% to $163.5M, beating forecasts, but stock gains faded as analysts remain cautious due to $150M operating cash burn and $8.2B deficit.

Plug Power posted a blowout first quarter that beat top- and bottom-line expectations, yet the stock’s initial 15% surge faded as investors weighed the disconnect between operational progress and lingering balance sheet strains. While four analyst firms lifted their price targets in quick succession, the majority retained neutral ratings — suggesting Wall Street is not yet ready to buy into the turnaround narrative wholesale.

Revenue soared 22% year-over-year to $163.5 million, handily topping the consensus estimate of roughly $140 million. The electrolyzer segment stole the spotlight, with sales quadrupling to $40.8 million. Adjusted earnings per share of negative $0.08 came in a penny better than expected and marked a sharp improvement from the prior year’s loss of $0.17. The GAAP gross margin swung 42 percentage points higher to negative 13%, fueled by Project Quantum Leap, the internal restructuring that has driven down service costs, extended product lifespans, and improved hydrogen margins. Operating loss narrowed from over $178 million to approximately $109 million.

The analyst community responded with a flurry of target revisions, though conviction remains uneven. B. Riley Financial set the highest target at $5.00, the only major house to issue a Buy rating. Susquehanna lifted its target from $2.75 to $3.75 but held at Neutral, while Canaccord Genuity raised to $4.00 and stuck with Hold. TD Cowen and BMO Capital moved to $3.00 and $1.20 respectively, both staying cautious. HC Wainwright reaffirmed a $7.00 target alongside its Buy rating. The average analyst price objective now stands at $3.37, just below where the shares currently trade in euro terms.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Beyond the core forklift business anchored by Walmart and Amazon, Plug Power is gaining traction in electrolyzers with a project pipeline valued at roughly $8 billion. Marquee contracts include a 100 MW system with Galp Energia in Portugal and a 275 MW award for Hy2gen in Canada. Management also highlighted that geopolitical tensions in Europe are accelerating interest in sustainable aviation fuel, while the AI boom is pulling fuel cells into the spotlight as an alternative power source for energy-hungry data centers.

For all the operational momentum, the cash flow picture remains a concern. Plug Power burned approximately $150 million in operating cash during the quarter, and its accumulated deficit has climbed to $8.2 billion. The company ended March with total cash of $802 million, of which $223 million was freely available. To shore up liquidity, management is counting on roughly $275 million in asset sales in 2026 — including a $142 million deal with Stream Data Centers slated for June and a $39.2 million tax credit transaction tied to a Louisiana hydrogen facility expected to close by the end of May. Whether those proceeds materialize on schedule is an open question.

Year-to-date, the stock has advanced roughly 67% and trades well above its 200-day moving average, reflecting the improved sentiment. But that rally also leaves it vulnerable to pullbacks. The company is targeting 13% to 15% revenue growth for the full year and aims to hit positive adjusted EBITDA by the fourth quarter — a milestone that has so far proved elusive. Should Plug Power deliver, it would mark the first concrete evidence that the restructuring is more than a paper turnaround.
