Plug Power’s Golden Cross and Surprise Profit Beat Face Off Against a $150M Quarterly Cash Drain
15.05.2026 - 19:21:25 | boerse-global.de
Shares of Plug Power have surged 64% since the start of the year, climbing from below €1 to over €3. But the rally hit a speed bump on Friday, with the stock sliding 4.5% to €3.12 as investors weighed the hydrogen specialist’s rapid operational improvements against its persistent liquidity strains.
The first-quarter results, released earlier this week, delivered a clear beat on the bottom line. The adjusted loss per share came in at $0.08, well ahead of the $0.17 loss analysts had penciled in. More striking was the gross margin, which swung from minus 55% in the year-ago period to minus 13% — still in negative territory but a 42-percentage-point improvement that underscores the turnaround narrative. The electrolyzer business led the charge, with revenue more than quadrupling to $40.8 million from $9.2 million a year earlier.
That operational momentum, however, masks a cash crunch. Plug Power burned $150 million in operating cash during the first quarter. The balance sheet shows total cash of $802 million, but only $223 million of that is freely available. To bridge the gap, management is pursuing asset sales expected to generate over $275 million this year. Roughly $39.2 million has already been secured through the sale of tax credits as of May, and a larger $142 million transaction is slated for June.
The company’s path to positive EBITDA — targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026 — hinges on completing those asset sales on schedule. Chief Financial Officer Paul Middleton has flagged sequential revenue growth for the second quarter and reiterated a full-year revenue target of 13% to 15% growth, with analysts already expecting a double-digit top-line increase.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
Short sellers circle amid a technical breakout
On the chart, Plug Power recently produced a Golden Cross, with the 50-day moving average crossing above the 200-day moving average. The stock now trades roughly 54% above its 200-day average, a testament to how far the recovery has run. That rally has attracted heavy short interest: nearly 25% of the free float is sold short, and with an average daily volume of 87 million shares, the days-to-cover ratio stands at 4.4. If the positive momentum holds, that could build squeeze pressure — a dynamic already playing out in the shares’ volatile swings.
Analyst opinions are split. TD Cowen lifted its price target to $3.00, which leaves the stock trading slightly above that level. B. Riley sees fair value at $5.00. The majority of street analysts currently rate the shares a Hold, reflecting the wide gap between operational progress and valuation — Plug Power trades at six times sales, triple the industry average of about two times.
Legal headwinds muddy the outlook
A class-action lawsuit alleging securities fraud related to disclosures around a multibillion-dollar Department of Energy loan adds another layer of uncertainty. The case focuses on what the company knew and when it informed investors about loan conditions. Combined with the high short interest, this legal overhang contributes to the stock’s elevated volatility.
Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Despite these risks, a structural tailwind is emerging from the AI boom. Data centers facing five- to seven-year waits for grid connections are turning to on-site energy solutions such as fuel cells, and key customers like Amazon and Walmart are planning large-scale fleet renewals starting in late 2026. That demand pipeline, together with the sharp margin improvement, gives Plug Power a credible — if still fragile — case for reaching the elusive breakeven milestone by year-end. The second-quarter results will offer the first real test of whether the margin swing is a one-off or the start of a sustained trend.
