Plug Power’s Earnings Countdown Begins as Geopolitical Headwinds Test a 181% Rally

The stock has nearly quadrupled from its lows a year ago, but the next two weeks will determine whether that momentum holds or fades. Plug Power shares closed Monday at €2.52, down 5.48% on the session, as stalled negotiations in the Middle East injected fresh uncertainty into the broader renewable energy space.
The pullback, however, barely scratches a remarkable run. Over the past twelve months, the hydrogen specialist’s equity has surged roughly 181%, and it still trades comfortably above its 50-day moving average. The technical picture remains constructive: the relative strength index sits at 60.8, neutral territory with no overbought signals, while the stock holds above both its 50- and 100-day lines.
Volume Drops as the Market Waits
Trading activity has cooled noticeably after a sharp breakout earlier this month. Daily turnover has settled around 45 million shares, well below the average of about 75 million. In consolidation phases, lighter volume often signals institutional caution — big money is sitting on the sidelines ahead of the next catalyst.
That catalyst arrives in the form of first-quarter earnings, though the exact date differs between sources. The company will report on either May 11 or May 13, with analysts forecasting a loss per share of $0.10 — more than 50% narrower than the year-ago period. Revenue is expected to rise roughly 5% year-over-year to around $141 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
Geopolitics Casts a Shadow Over the Sector
The renewable energy sector has become increasingly sensitive to global security developments. A recent extension of the ceasefire between the US and Iran had provided tailwinds, but talks over reopening the Strait of Hormuz hit a snag on Monday. Brent crude is now flirting with $108 a barrel, amplifying volatility across energy stocks.
For Plug Power, the macro backdrop adds another layer of complexity to an already ambitious turnaround story. The company closed the fourth quarter with revenue of $225 million and a loss per share of $0.69, both improvements from prior periods. Management continues to target GAAP profitability within two years.
The Quantum Leap Test
The upcoming quarterly report will serve as the first major checkpoint for “Project Quantum Leap,” an internal restructuring program aimed at achieving positive EBITDA by the end of 2026. The linchpin of that strategy is transitioning from expensive purchased hydrogen to in-house production at facilities in Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana. If that shift accelerates faster than anticipated, it could meaningfully improve the cost structure.
CEO Jose Luis Crespo, who took the helm in March, has stepped up investor outreach. A non-deal roadshow in Canada and direct engagement with retail shareholders are part of an effort to rebuild confidence and reinforce the narrative that Plug Power can reach profitability by 2028.
Electrolyzer Growth and Capital Concerns
On the operational front, the company’s electrolyzer business remains a key growth driver. Plug Power recently secured a contract for a 275-megawatt electrolysis system for the “Courant” hydrogen project in Quebec. Meanwhile, construction of up to six green hydrogen production plants is underway, backed by a billion-dollar loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy.
Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
But investors are also watching the capital structure closely. In February, shareholders approved doubling the maximum number of authorized shares to three billion, raising concerns about future dilution. Jefferies analysts currently rate the stock a “Hold” with a price target of $1.80.
For the full year, analysts project a reduced loss of $0.31 per share. Sustained revenue growth will be essential to ease worries about the company’s cash burn — and to prove that the rally of the past year has fundamental support behind it.
