Plug Power’s Cost-Cutting Binge Starts Bearing Fruit as Q1 Revenue Jumps 22%

Plug Power’s first-quarter results finally gave the hydrogen specialist a storyline investors can hang their hat on. Revenue smashed expectations, margins took a sharp turn for the better, and the company’s long-touted restructuring program—Project Quantum Leap—showed up in the hard numbers. The market responded by sending shares to a seven-month high and putting short sellers on the defensive.
The headline number for the quarter ended March 2026: $163.5 million in revenue, a 22.3% jump from a year earlier. Analysts had been looking for something in the mid-$140 million range. The surprise came largely from the electrolyzer business, where sales surged to $40.8 million from just $9.2 million a year ago—a sign that Plug Power is no longer just a fuel-cell story.
Under the hood, the cost-reduction drive is starting to reshape the income statement. Gross margin under GAAP improved to negative 13%, a dramatic swing from the negative 55% reported in the same period last year. The 54-percentage-point jump was fueled by a 30% drop in service costs per unit for the GenDrive product line and better hydrogen fuel margins as in-house green hydrogen production ramps up.
“Project Quantum Leap” now has concrete numbers to back the rhetoric. Management reiterated its target of hitting positive EBITDA by the end of 2026, with operating income penciled in for 2027 and full net profitability by 2028. CEO Jose Luis Crespo framed the quarter as evidence of stronger commercial execution and improving business economics.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
The bottom line still carries a sting. The GAAP net loss came in at $245.3 million, including roughly $140 million in non-cash charges tied to convertible notes and warrants. Adjusted loss per share was $0.08, narrower than the consensus estimate of $0.09 to $0.10. On an adjusted operating basis, the loss also beat expectations, though the company’s cash burn remains a concern—cash stood at $802 million, a vital buffer but one that BMO Capital flagged as under pressure from a larger-than-expected outflow.
Wall Street analysts wasted little time updating their models. Canaccord Genuity lifted its price target to $4.00 from $2.50 but kept a “Hold” rating. TD Cowen raised its target to $3.00 from $2.00, while Clear Street initiated at $3.50 with a “Buy” tag. On the bullish end, B. Riley and Craig-Hallum both set targets at $5.00, citing progress toward profitability. RBC Capital held at “Sector Perform” with a $2.75 target, and BMO Capital remained the most cautious at $1.20. The average analyst target now sits at $2.83, though the stock has already blown past that level.
The share price reaction was fierce. After opening with a gap up, the stock hit a seven-month high in U.S. trading. In Germany, the ADR equivalent closed at €3.03 on Tuesday, good for a 28.55% gain over the past month and a 59.44% rally year-to-date. The stock now trades roughly 34% above its 50-day moving average, a sign that momentum has shifted dramatically.
Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The short interest, at about 25% of the float, added fuel to the move. On Stocktwits, message volume surged more than 1,400% and sentiment was rated “extremely bullish.” The combination of positive news and a heavy short position creates a classic squeeze setup, though the sustainability of the rally hinges on continued operational improvement.
For the full year, Plug Power projects revenue growth of 13% to 15%. The next critical test is whether the margin gains can hold as the business scales. Meanwhile, the company plans to monetize a tax credit from its St. Gabriel joint venture for $39.2 million by the end of this month, providing a short-term cash injection. If management can deliver on its promise of positive EBITDA by the fourth quarter, the rally will have a far more solid foundation than it does today.
