Plug Power's CEO Bets on Reddit to Rally Retail Investors
11.04.2026 - 04:33:03 | boerse-global.deNew CEO Jose Luis Crespo is taking Plug Power's investor relations directly to the people. In an unconventional move, Crespo will host an open question-and-answer session on Reddit on April 16, facing unvarnished queries from retail shareholders. This direct engagement comes at a pivotal moment, as the hydrogen company balances nascent operational progress against persistent market skepticism and a heavy short interest.
The session will force Crespo to address two immediate pressure points: the timeline for further asset sales and the stalled status of a critical U.S. Department of Energy loan program. The company suspended activities related to the multi-billion-dollar program at the end of 2025 and has warned the entire credit facility could still fail.
Financially, the company is charting a narrow path. To secure liquidity, management is selling assets, including the "Project Gateway" site, which is expected to bring in at least $132.5 million. The leadership, with Crespo having taken the helm in early March, has laid out a strict profitability roadmap with clear milestones: achieving positive adjusted EBITDA by 2026, a positive operating income by 2027, and full profitability by 2028.
This plan, dubbed "Project Quantum Leap" internally, also targets ambitious revenue growth. Plug Power aims for an 18% annual growth rate, projecting sales to rise from $710 million in 2025 to $1.15 billion by 2028. Recent operational results offer a glimmer of hope. The fourth quarter of 2025 saw revenue climb to $225 million, up from $191 million a year earlier. More notably, the company posted its first-ever positive gross profit of $5.5 million.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
Losses, while still substantial, are narrowing. The GAAP net loss for Q4 2025 was $846 million, a significant improvement from the $1.34 billion loss in the prior-year period. This fundamental progress has powered the stock, which has surged over 130% in the past twelve months and currently trades around $2.34, well above its moving averages.
Yet, structural concerns continue to weigh on long-term holders. The number of outstanding shares has ballooned by approximately 50% in just the last year alone, and has increased nearly eightfold over the past decade due to continual capital raises. Meanwhile, short interest remains elevated, with about 23-24% of the free float held in short positions as of mid-March, reflecting deep-seated doubts about the turnaround.
Analyst opinions are divided. Susquehanna reiterated a "Hold" rating on April 10 with a $2.75 price target, while Craig-Hallum maintains a more optimistic "Buy" recommendation. A subtle but notable shift is occurring behind the scenes: over the past six months, corporate insiders have purchased nearly half as many shares as they have sold for every share sold, marking an increase in internal confidence compared to earlier periods.
Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Plug Power continues to secure significant contracts, underscoring its commercial reach. A recent 275-megawatt electrolyzer order for the Hy2gen project in Québec, Canada, is a key example. The coming Reddit forum represents a high-stakes test of credibility. CEO Crespo must convince both a skeptical market and a loyal retail base that "Project Quantum Leap" is more than just a name, and that the company's painful dilution phase is finally giving way to sustainable growth.
