Plug Power is navigating a tale of two narratives that seldom align. On one side, the hydrogen company is securing landmark contracts — a 50-megawatt electrolyzer order for Australia's Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub and a liquidity-boosting partnership with a US data center developer. On the other, the stock continues to slide, down nearly 18% over the past month, as investors weigh the costs of a business model in transition.

The order from Orica's Hunter Valley project, confirmed on 7 July, marks the largest green hydrogen initiative in Australia to reach a final investment decision. It is also the first to secure backing from the country's Hydrogen Headstart program, which carries a A$432 million envelope. Plug Power will supply its GenEco electrolyzers, capable of producing roughly 4,700 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually. The deal validates demand from hard-to-abate industrial sectors.

Six days later came a wholly different type of announcement. Plug Power struck two transactions with Stream US Data Centers designed to unlock more than $275 million in additional liquidity through asset sales, released collateral, and lower maintenance costs. The centerpiece is the sale of Plug's Graham, Texas, project — including land and 164 megawatts of grid interconnection capacity — for up to $76.5 million, with closing slated for the end of July 2026. At the end of June, the company held around $162 million in free cash, excluding proceeds from this deal.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

The juxtaposition of these moves reveals the strategic pivot underway. Plug Power is shedding the vertical-integration model it once championed — building and owning hydrogen infrastructure — in favor of an asset-light approach that supplies equipment to hubs financed and developed by others. The Texas land sale to a data center developer is, as one industry publication bluntly put it, part of the liquidation of a once-government-supported hydrogen program on the road to profitability. The market has taken note, but not in the way management might hope.

Technical indicators paint a picture of a stock under duress. The 14-day relative strength index sits near 31, deep in oversold territory. Shares closed recently at €2.00, a far cry from the June high of €3.72 — a drop of roughly 46%. The stock trades 11% below its 200-day moving average of €2.26 and 26% under the 50-day average of €2.69. Yet at 66% above the August 2025 low of €1.21, the chart also suggests the possibility of a floor, however precarious.

Analyst sentiment has turned cautious. Susquehanna's Biju Perincheril maintained his "neutral" rating but slashed the price target from $3.75 to $2.50 in the same week the Hunter Valley order was announced. The consensus target of €3.10 implies a 55% theoretical upside, but with annualized 30-day volatility exceeding 56%, such a figure often reflects defensive positioning rather than conviction.

The real question for Plug Power is whether its cash runway is long enough to bridge the gap between today's financing needs and tomorrow's revenue from the AI-and-hydrogen convergence. The Stream partnership demonstrates that the demand side — from data centers hungry for clean, reliable power — is real. The Orica order proves that heavy industry is moving. But asset sales, tax credit monetization, and working capital releases are stopgap measures, not sustainable cash generation. Every session reprices the same uncertainty: can Plug Power stay solvent long enough to become a credible supplier to the markets that are already opening up? The answer, for now, changes with each tick.
