Plug Power's share price took a beating on Friday, tumbling nearly 10% in a single session as a stronger-than-expected US jobs report rattled the hydrogen sector. The stock closed at €2.80, deepening its weekly loss to 17.7% and underscoring how macro headwinds are overwhelming even positive company-specific news.

The May payrolls data showed 172,000 new positions, topping forecasts and pushing the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike this year above 60%. For capital-intensive growth industries like hydrogen and renewables, higher-for-longer interest rates are a direct threat to valuations. The sell-off was sector-wide: Ballard Power Systems dropped 17.6% and FuelCell Energy slid more than 19%.

A Cash Injection from Louisiana

Just days before the rout, Plug Power had closed a $39.2 million transaction that provided fresh liquidity without issuing new equity or debt. The company sold a US investment tax credit (ITC) tied to its hydrogen liquefaction facility in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. The credit was originally valued at roughly $44 million. The plant, which began operations in April 2025 and can liquefy up to 15 tons of hydrogen daily, is operated through Hidrogenii, a joint venture with Olin Corporation.

The St. Gabriel sale is part of a broader strategy to monetize assets and preserve financial flexibility. In January 2025, Plug Power completed a similar $30 million ITC transfer for the Woodbine, Georgia hydrogen project. Chief Executive Jose Luis Crespo framed the latest transaction as evidence that infrastructure investments can generate liquidity without relying heavily on equity or debt, adding that the company plans further asset sales, including of data-center holdings.

Board Departure and AGM Vote Loom

On Thursday, June 11, Plug Power will hold its virtual annual general meeting. A key item on the agenda is a proposal to expand the stock option plan by 25 million shares — a move that, while common in the sector, routinely stokes dilution concerns. The meeting also coincides with the departure of board member Kavita Mahtani, effective June 11, 2026. Mahtani, who joined the board in April 2022, is leaving to take a senior role at Wells Fargo. Plug Power stressed that her resignation is not due to any disagreement over business or strategy.

The AGM vote is shaping up as the next directional catalyst for a stock that has been extremely volatile. Crespo is expected to provide a business update and host a Q&A session, with investors likely to press him on cash burn, the pace of asset sales, and the path to profitability.

Financial Position and Technical Picture

Plug Power's first-quarter results for 2026 showed revenue growth of 22% year-over-year to $163.5 million, but the net loss widened to $245.3 million. The company ended March with $802 million in cash, including restricted funds. Management has set a target of reaching positive adjusted EBITDA by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Technically, the stock is barely holding above its 50-day moving average of €2.74. The recent high of €3.72 was touched on June 2 — the same day the St. Gabriel tax credit sale closed — leaving the shares 24.8% below that peak. The relative strength index sits at 42.7, and the annualized volatility exceeds 100%. Despite the pullback, Plug Power is still up 47.3% year-to-date and an eye-popping 266.6% over the past twelve months, reflecting the stock's wild swings in both directions.
