The company’s strategic pivot is gaining significant traction, underscored by a record-breaking order backlog and its first-ever leap into profitability as it closes its 2026 fiscal year. This expansion is being supported by a major production increase in Berlin and a recalibrated data policy in response to geopolitical developments.

A Landmark Year: Profitability Achieved

Fiscal Year 2026 represented a major financial turning point for Planet Labs. The company outperformed expectations with revenue climbing 26% to $307.7 million, driven by a particularly strong fourth quarter where growth accelerated to 41%. For investors, the more critical milestone was the shift to profitability. Planet Labs generated a positive adjusted EBITDA of $15.5 million and nearly $53 million in free cash flow, marking its first profitable year.

This financial success is directly tied to an extraordinary surge in demand. The company’s order backlog ballooned by 79% over the past year, reaching approximately $900 million. Management attributes this growth to the rising need for its "Data Intelligence" services, where satellite imagery is processed through artificial intelligence to deliver actionable insights for both government and commercial clients.

Strategic Expansion in Berlin

To keep pace with this accelerating demand, Planet Labs is executing a major capacity expansion at its Berlin facility. Production capacity for its next-generation Pelican satellites is slated to double. This move is supported by substantial new government contracts, including a deal valued in the hundreds of millions with the Swedish Armed Forces and a €240 million agreement with the German federal government to bolster national security initiatives.

Navigating a Complex Geopolitical Landscape

Alongside its technical and commercial growth, Planet Labs has adjusted its data dissemination policies in light of global tensions. At the request of the U.S. government, the public release of high-resolution imagery from Iran and adjacent conflict zones in the Middle East has been indefinitely suspended as of April 4, 2026. Access to this sensitive data is now restricted, granted only on a case-by-case basis for mission-critical operations or where a verified public interest exists. The policy aims to prevent adversarial forces from leveraging commercial satellite data for tactical purposes such as targeting or missile guidance.

Looking ahead to Fiscal Year 2027, company leadership projects revenue will climb to as much as $440 million, which would represent an increase of roughly 39%. In response to these optimistic forecasts, analysts from Wedbush and Cantor Fitzgerald have raised their price targets, with some approaching the $40 mark. The company’s continued success is expected to hinge on the seamless scaling of its Pelican satellite constellation and its ability to secure further large-scale government partnerships.
