Investors have propelled shares of Brazil's state-controlled oil giant Petrobras higher following its strategic move into a promising new offshore region. The company's announcement of a significant stake in a Namibian exploration block has generated bullish options activity and comes just days before its quarterly earnings report, setting the stage for a pivotal week.

A Major Offshore Acquisition in Africa

In a key diversification play, Petrobras secured a 42.5% participating interest in Namibia's Block 2613, located in the prolific Lüderitz Basin, in early February 2026. The agreement partners the Brazilian firm with TotalEnergies, which holds an identical 42.5% stake and will operate the license. The block covers a substantial area of approximately 11,000 square kilometers, marking a significant step in Petrobras' strategy to broaden its reserve portfolio beyond its domestic assets.

The transaction remains conditional upon final approval from Namibian authorities. Until regulatory clearance is granted, the deal represents potential rather than a concluded asset.

Market Reaction and Options Surge

The market's response was decisively positive. On Monday, March 2, 2026, Petrobras shares advanced by 4.15%. Trading volume surged to nearly 44 million shares, well above the average of 25.5 million. Perhaps more telling was the activity in the options market, where investors purchased 68,297 call options—a 53% increase over typical levels. This surge in bullish bets indicates strong investor confidence in further upside.

With a market capitalization of $111.65 billion and a P/E ratio of 8.02, the company's valuation remains moderate. Its dividend yield stands at an attractive 6.2%.

Quarterly Results Loom

All eyes now turn to the upcoming release of fourth-quarter 2025 results, scheduled for March 6. Petrobras has demonstrated operational resilience in recent quarters despite a challenging price environment. For instance, in Q2 2025, the company increased its oil production to 2.3 million barrels per day, an 8% year-over-year rise. It posted a net profit of $4.1 billion and an EBITDA of $10.2 billion, even as the average Brent crude price fell from $75 to $67 per barrel.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Petrobras?

The firm's current $109 billion investment plan for 2026-2030 allocates $69.2 billion to exploration and production. A majority of this E&P capital (62%) is directed toward Brazil's high-productivity pre-salt fields. Operational improvements are evident in the reduced break-even price for Brent crude, which has been lowered from $82 to $59 per barrel.

Broadening the International Footprint

The Namibian venture is part of a wider international expansion. Petrobras has also established positions in South Africa and Colombia. In Colombia, the company's Sirius-2 well, discovered in late 2024, is recognized as the largest natural gas find in the country's history. Its estimated capacity is nearly equivalent to half of Petrobras' daily gas production in Brazil.

Looking ahead, management aims to boost production to 2.7 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2028, stabilizing at around 2.6 million barrels through 2034. This long-term production framework is designed to support sustained capital returns and growth, contingent on meeting operational targets and navigating regulatory processes successfully.
