Pensana Shifts Focus to US Market with Ambitious Rare Earths Strategy
03.04.2026 - 06:48:24 | boerse-global.deIn a significant strategic pivot, UK-based Pensana is reorienting its operations towards the United States, aiming to establish a secure supply chain from mine to magnet. The company's revised approach is driven by favorable US industrial policy, including government price guarantees, which present a more compelling economic case than its previous plans.
Strategic Pivot and Core Asset
The cornerstone of Pensana's strategy remains the Longonjo rare earths project in Angola, a source of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr). These metals are critical for manufacturing the high-performance permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors and wind turbines. The company has abandoned earlier proposals to build a refinery in Saltend, UK, citing superior financial incentives and policy support in the United States as the decisive factor.
Investors responded positively to recent operational updates, with the company's shares advancing approximately 6.8% over a weekly period. The stock closed at €1.10 on Thursday, yet remains substantially below its 52-week high of €2.08.

Financing a Dual-Continent Plan
To fund its ambitious blueprint, Pensana has already secured a strategic investment worth $165 million. Concurrently, the company is in advanced discussions with the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM) to obtain a further credit facility of $160 million. This capital is intended to finance development at the Longonjo mine and support related US-based initiatives.
Further integrating into the American supply chain, Pensana is cultivating partnerships with Western manufacturers. This includes a collaboration with Vacuumschmelze, which is planning a magnet plant in South Carolina.
Roadmap to Production and US Listing
The company has outlined a clear timeline for its key objectives:
- Targeted Nasdaq listing: 2026
- Planned production start at Longonjo: 2027
- Confirmed strategic investment: $165 million
- Proposed EXIM Bank credit facility: $160 million
An upcoming drilling program is designed to expand the resource base in Angola, with the goal of positioning Longonjo as one of the world's premier rare earth deposits. By targeting initial production for 2027, Pensana aims to establish an independent supply source ahead of the impending US ban on Chinese magnets in defense systems.
