Palantir Technologies has landed one of the most significant government contracts in its corporate history. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded the data analytics firm a five-year, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity agreement with a potential ceiling value of $1 billion. This substantial deal underscores sustained, record-level demand for the company's artificial intelligence platforms, even as its shares have declined approximately 20% since the start of the year.

Financial Performance and Ambitious Outlook

The company's recent financial results provide context for the contract win. For the fourth quarter of 2025, Palantir reported revenue surged 70% to $1.41 billion, significantly surpassing analyst expectations of $1.33 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.25, compared to estimates of $0.23.

Looking ahead, management has provided a robust forecast for the full 2026 fiscal year, projecting revenue between $7.18 billion and $7.20 billion. This guidance far exceeds the prior analyst consensus of $6.22 billion. A key growth driver is the U.S. commercial business, where revenue is anticipated to increase by at least 115%. Furthermore, the company's remaining performance obligation—a measure of future revenue under contract—jumped from $2.6 billion in Q3 to $4.2 billion in Q4. This sharp increase suggests large agreements, such as the new DHS framework, may already be partially reflected in its backlog.

A Strategic Anchor in Government Business

Government clients constitute a stable foundation for Palantir, accounting for roughly 55% of total revenue. The new DHS framework agreement solidifies this segment's resilience. It provides various DHS components, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), with streamlined access to Palantir's Gotham and Foundry platforms without requiring separate procurement processes.

In an internal communication, Chief Technology Officer Akash Jain referred to the pact as the "next chapter" in a partnership dating back to 2011. The contract structure allows funds to be allocated through individual task orders rather than a single lump-sum payment. Its scope holds potential for expansion to other agencies within the department, such as the Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The deal also renews discussion regarding Palantir's role in sensitive areas like immigration surveillance.

Wall Street Analysts Reassess the Stock

Coinciding with the government contract news, sentiment among financial analysts has begun to shift. According to data from FactSet, the proportion of analysts rating Palantir shares a "Buy" has climbed to 57%, up from just 25% in December.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

A notable change came from Mizuho analyst Gregg Moskowitz in mid-February. He upgraded the stock from Neutral to Outperform and set a price target of $195. Moskowitz argued that Palantir delivers a combination of revenue growth, acceleration, and margin expansion that is unique within the software sector. He also pointed to a valuation correction he views as unwarranted, noting the stock's estimated enterprise value-to-free cash flow multiple had contracted by approximately 46% in the first six weeks of the year.

High Valuation Meets Sector-Wide Pressure

Despite strong fundamentals and improving analyst sentiment, Palantir's valuation remains elevated. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio above 100 and a price-to-sales multiple of about 45 for 2026. These premium metrics, coupled with a broad sell-off in the software sector driven by concerns over AI-driven disruption to traditional business models, continue to present headwinds for the share price.

The coming quarters will test whether Palantir can maintain its current growth trajectory. The company must demonstrate its ability to justify its high valuation through continued execution on major contracts like the DHS deal, all while navigating a challenging market environment for technology equities.
