Palantir shares drop 31% YTD as insider selling surges, even as a Pentagon victory and Citigroup's 53% revenue growth forecast signal strong fundamentals.

The gap between what Palantir’s business is delivering and what its stock price reflects has rarely been wider. On one hand, the company just scored a significant procedural victory against the Pentagon, and analysts at Citigroup are projecting 53% revenue growth for fiscal 2027. On the other, the stock has shed nearly a third of its value since the start of 2026, and a steady drumbeat of insider selling is raising uncomfortable questions about who really believes in the upside.

Palantir closed Friday at €107.90, down 6.74% on the week and 31.33% year-to-date. From the November 2025 all-time highs, the shares are now more than 40% lower. The 30-day trend shows a nearly 8% bounce — evidence that sharp counter-moves are possible — but that does little to change the broader picture of a stock that ranks among the worst performers in its sector this year.

A Pentagon Pause That Favors Palantir

The most consequential news of the week came not from an earnings release or an analyst call, but from Washington. The Defense Intelligence Agency formally withdrew its solicitation for Project ASTRA, a planned AI-powered intelligence system to be built from scratch for the agency.

Palantir had formally protested the procurement, arguing that the government should leverage existing commercial software rather than developing expensive custom solutions. The withdrawal effectively validates that argument. For Palantir, it means the competition for lucrative intelligence contracts has paused while its own Maven Smart System is already embedded in the agency’s workflow. No new contract was signed, but the company secured a form of market protection that would be hard to replicate through any single deal.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

Citigroup Trims Its Target but Sees Faster Growth

Wall Street’s reaction to the Pentagon development has been measured. Citigroup lowered its price target on Palantir from $225 to $200, while maintaining a Buy rating. The reduction reflects shrinking valuation multiples across the software sector rather than any deterioration in Palantir’s fundamentals.

In fact, Citi’s analysts expect revenue growth of 53% for fiscal 2027, well above the consensus estimate of 45%. That creates a curious dynamic: the stock is suffering from a general tech-sector cooling, but the underlying business appears to be running stronger than the share price suggests. The analyst consensus price target stands at €161.01, implying upside of 49.2% from Friday’s close.

Insider Sales That Are Hard to Ignore

What makes this correction different from a routine valuation adjustment is the persistent stream of insider selling. Director Alexander D. Moore sold 16,000 shares on July 15 for roughly $2.1 million. Weeks earlier, CTO Shyam Sankar offloaded 185,000 shares at an average price of $130 — his largest sale of the year, netting about $24 million.

The list goes back further. In May, CEO Alex Karp cashed out $54 million from his own holdings, and co-founder Stephen Cohen added another $43.5 million. That makes four senior insiders who have taken significant money off the table within a few months.

Technically, none of this is improper. Moore’s sales were executed through a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan established on December 11, 2025. Sankar’s transactions followed a similar pre-arranged pattern. Such plans exist precisely so executives can diversify their wealth without triggering insider-trading suspicions.

But the sheer scale and frequency of these sales — occurring while the stock is fighting to hold technical support levels — is becoming harder for the market to dismiss as mere portfolio management. When a CTO, CEO, co-founder, and a director all sell within a short window, the cumulative signal carries more weight than any single transaction.

A Stock Caught Between Two Narratives

This tension is structural. On one side sits a business that consistently beats its own forecasts. On the other is a stock that had priced in near-flawless execution over multiple years. The gap between operational momentum and market price means that almost any piece of news — an insider sale, a competitor’s product, a regulatory inquiry — can trigger a multi-percentage daily swing.

Palantir at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The technical picture reinforces that fragility. The relative strength index sits at 42.6, signaling neither oversold conditions nor clear upward momentum. Annualized volatility of nearly 49% reflects how violently sentiment swings around an unresolved valuation question. On the positive side, the stock is roughly 15% above its June 26 low, suggesting buyers have stepped in at lower levels — though they have yet to reclaim the old highs.

The August 3 Test

The next real test comes on August 3, 2026, when Palantir reports second-quarter earnings. For the thesis that commercial growth is accelerating — as Citi’s projections imply — this report will be the proving ground. If the optimistic revenue estimates are confirmed, it could provide the catalyst needed to break through the current chart resistance.

Until then, Palantir remains trapped in an uncomfortable limbo: operationally one of the strongest stories in the AI sector, but a stock the market is unwilling to trust at current levels. The insider selling has only deepened that skepticism. Whether the August numbers can bridge the gap between what the business is delivering and what the stock price reflects will determine which of those two truths ultimately prevails.
