Palantir Technologies Inc. shares found a lift from easing geopolitical tensions this week, but the core debate surrounding the stock remains firmly anchored to its eye-watering valuation. While a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran provided a broad market tailwind, pushing the Nasdaq up over 3% and Palantir's stock roughly 3% higher, investor focus is rapidly shifting to the company's upcoming earnings and its position in a multi-billion dollar defense AI race.

The temporary truce, announced ahead of a U.S. deadline, triggered an immediate 17% plunge in oil prices by guaranteeing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. This key shipping chokepoint had been blocked, stranding 187 tankers carrying 172 million barrels of crude and products in the Gulf. The de-escalation eased inflation fears, bolstering sentiment across equities. However, the situation remains fragile, with Iran's foreign minister confirming only a suspension of defensive operations while keeping forces on high alert.

Beyond short-term geopolitics, Palantir's fundamental story is powered by its entrenched role in U.S. defense technology. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives recently reinforced his Outperform rating, lifting his price target to $230 and labeling Palantir the critical "First Mover" in a structural defense AI cycle. He argues the company owns the essential software layer, built upon infrastructure from partners like Oracle and Microsoft.

This thesis gained concrete support in March when U.S. Under Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg signed a directive formally establishing Palantir's Maven Smart System as an official Department of Defense program. This classification secures long-term, stable funding. Furthermore, Palantir, alongside Anduril Industries, is developing software for the potential "Golden Dome" missile defense system—a program with an estimated total value of $185 billion. Analysts at Rosenblatt Securities project Palantir's government revenue for 2026-2028 could reach $18.2 billion, significantly above the consensus estimate of $13.6 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

The company's financials underscore rapid growth. For the upcoming quarter, analysts anticipate earnings per share of $0.29, more than double the prior-year period, on estimated revenue of approximately $1.54 billion—a jump of nearly 74%. This follows a record-breaking fourth quarter in 2025, where total contract value hit $4.3 billion. Quarterly revenue in that period grew 70% to $1.407 billion, with U.S. government sales rising 66% to $570 million and U.S. commercial revenue soaring 137%. Customer count increased by 34% to 954.

For the full year, management guides revenue between $7.18 and $7.20 billion, with analysts projecting earnings per share of $1.32, up from $0.75 the previous year.

Yet, these impressive figures collide with a valuation that gives even bulls pause. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 112 and roughly 80 times sales—the highest multiples among large-cap software peers. Even based on 2026 revenue projections, the price-to-sales ratio stands at about 49, compared to a sector median near 17. UBS analyst Karl Keirstead maintains a $200 price target, citing an improved risk-reward profile after the stock's pullback from its 52-week high. The share price, having recovered from a daily low near $144, currently trades around 133 euros, still roughly 26% below its yearly peak.

Palantir at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The upcoming quarterly report in May serves as the next critical test. It will reveal if the explosive growth pace continues and may offer early insights from Golden Dome software testing planned for this summer. Concurrently, oversight of the Maven program is transitioning to the Pentagon's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, a process slated for completion by the end of September. Whether Palantir's growth can ultimately justify its premium remains the central, unresolved question for the market.
