One Weekly Burst of Interval Training Trims Fat as Effectively as Three Sessions, Research Shows

A study tracking 315 adults over three years has upended a common assumption about exercise frequency. Researchers at the University of Hong Kong found that a single weekly interval-training session of 75 minutes reduces body fat mass and waist circumference just as much as three separate sessions spread across a week. The trial ran from September 2021 to September 2024 and offers a practical shortcut for people who struggle to fit in multiple workouts.
The finding lands at a time when workplace health programmes are searching for time-efficient solutions. Data from Germany’s Institute for Employment Research (IAB) from 2023 shows that employees working from home tend to move less than their office-based colleagues. Experts caution that standing desks alone are not enough; the real benefit comes from mixing sitting, standing and active movement.
One example of how organisations are trying to embed activity into the workday recently took place in Austria. The University of Education Styria and the LBS Bad Radkersburg, together with the football club SK Sturm Graz, held an event called “Fit im Kopf durch Bewegungspausen” – fit in the mind through movement breaks. Thomas Tebbich from SK Sturm Graz accompanied the project, which saw students and teachers take part in a business run at Lake Schwarzl. School principal Roswitha Krenn reported positive effects on learning and work performance. The initiative builds on a 2019 study from the University of British Columbia showing that moderate 10- to 15-minute activity breaks significantly boost cognitive function.
For workers who cannot commit to a daily gym visit, the Hong Kong results suggest that intensity matters more than frequency. Even everyday activities such as climbing stairs can stimulate muscle strength, heart health and mental resilience, according to specialists. The key is to plan short movement breaks every 60 to 90 minutes, using small detours or coupling exercise with existing routines – without requiring dedicated training blocks.
Companies interested in formal programmes can book certified providers for active breaks in hybrid teams. Under Section 20 of Germany’s Social Code Book V, health insurance funds can cover the costs. Service firms such as Strong Partners offer specific programmes. Regional courses are also springing up: gentle gymnastics and Pilates classes start on 8 June in Bernau near Berlin, and an intensive workshop is scheduled for mid-June in Mannheim. In Frankfurt, a new organic herbal tea enriched with protein and collagen has been developed for health-conscious consumers.
