Onco-Innovations has wrapped up a pilot project with UK-based Kuano, using a blend of quantum computing and artificial intelligence to refine its lead asset ONC010, a PNKP inhibitor designed to disrupt DNA repair in solid tumours. The collaboration delivered fresh molecular models that give the Canadian biotech a sharper foundation for selecting drug candidates before experimental validation.

The company’s chief executive, Thomas O’Shaughnessy, is betting on computational speed to stretch a thin budget. “The AI-powered data should shorten our iteration cycles and accelerate the preclinical phase, allowing us to deploy limited resources more precisely,” the CEO said. Those resources stand at roughly 514,000 Canadian dollars in cash and equivalents — a slender cushion even for a development-stage firm navigating a tough financing climate for biotech juniors.

Investors, however, have not yet rewarded the scientific advance. The stock closed the latest session at 0.44 euros, shedding nearly 49% since the start of the year. A relative strength index of 33.4 points to weak momentum, and the broader 12-month picture is stark: the shares have lost about half their value. Wednesday brought a 7.72% pop to 0.47 euros after the Kuano update, but the equity still trades more than 35% below its 200-day moving average.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Onco-Innovations?

Management has already mapped out the next steps. Kuano’s platform, which applies quantum-based modelling to drug-target interactions, allowed Onco-Innovations to tweak structural hypotheses around how PNKP inhibitors bind. The team now plans to run toxicity mapping and refined molecule design, aiming to optimise ONC010’s chemical properties before pushing it toward preclinical evaluation. The ultimate goal remains to use the gathered data to steer the programme into clinical trials.

Efficiency is survival for a firm of this size. The company hopes combining AI with quantum simulation will cut the time and cost of winnowing candidates — a necessity when every dollar counts. Whether the market eventually reflects the scientific milestones depends on how quickly those iterations convert into a viable drug and, equally, whether Onco-Innovations can keep the lights on long enough to get there.
