OMV receives first electrolyzer for its Petrobrazi refinery, marking a key step in a €750M project to produce sustainable aviation fuel and green hydrogen by 2028.

A cornerstone of OMV's sustainability strategy has moved into a new phase of implementation. The delivery of a critical piece of equipment marks tangible progress for the Austrian energy group's ambitious plans in Romania. German technology firm Neuman & Esser supplied the initial electrolyzer module to the Petrobrazi refinery on March 17, setting the stage for a project designed to establish one of Southeastern Europe's most significant sustainable fuel centers.

Financial and Market Context

Investors have been responding positively to OMV's strategic direction. The company's shares closed at €60.45 in the latest trading session, equaling their 52-week peak. This price represents an advance of nearly 25% since the start of the year. Market technicians note a Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 72, indicating a potentially overbought condition that could lead to short-term consolidation. However, the medium-term trend appears robust, with the share price trading approximately 25% above its 200-day moving average—a signal that the market is pricing in the group's ongoing transformation.

A €750 Million Investment Program Takes Shape

This initial module is a component of a 20-megawatt project with a planned annual production capacity of roughly 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. The output will be integral to manufacturing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). These next-generation fuels are projected to reduce CO? emissions by a minimum of 65% across their entire lifecycle compared to conventional fossil-based alternatives.

The total capital expenditure for the comprehensive SAF/HVO program is set at €750 million. Of this sum, €190 million is allocated specifically to the hydrogen production facilities. The project is receiving financial support through non-repayable grants totaling €21 million from Romania's PNRR recovery and resilience fund.

Project Timeline and Scale

The installation of three additional electrolyzer modules is scheduled over the coming months. The complete SAF/HVO production unit is targeted for commissioning in 2028. While the site will remain an active construction zone until then, the project now follows a clearly defined roadmap following this key delivery. This initiative underscores OMV's commitment to evolving its refining operations into hubs for lower-carbon energy solutions.
