OMV names BP veteran Emma Delaney as new CEO. She faces falling production, refining margins, and sabotage risks to key pipeline, while high oil prices and new gas supplies offer strategic shifts.

Austrian energy group OMV is navigating a critical leadership transition against a backdrop of geopolitical volatility and operational strain. The company confirmed that Emma Delaney, a veteran BP executive, will take over as CEO in September, succeeding Alfred Stern. Her appointment marks a historic first for the conglomerate, making her the first female chair of the executive board in OMV's history.

The incoming CEO, an Irish national with over three decades of experience at BP, faces immediate challenges. First-quarter figures reveal a drop in average daily production to 288,000 barrels of oil equivalent. Simultaneously, refining margins collapsed from EUR 10.76 to just EUR 6.65 per barrel, despite higher plant utilization. The company also booked one-off hedging losses of approximately EUR 100 million, stemming from geopolitical tensions in the Iran conflict and disrupted crude oil supplies.

These fundamental pressures have weighed on the share price, which fell 6.33% on a weekly basis to trade at EUR 59.20. Investor focus now shifts to upcoming events: the full Q1 report due in April and the Annual General Meeting in May, where a vote on a previously announced dividend reduction is scheduled.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Omv?

External market forces are adding further complexity. Brent crude oil surged to USD 102.60 a barrel, with WTI briefly touching USD 105.25. This spike is driven by tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and damage to Saudi Arabia's Satorp refinery. While high prices benefit OMV's upstream operations, they squeeze refinery profitability through increased feedstock costs.

A separate security incident is also under investigation. Prosecutors in Trieste, working with German authorities, are treating damage to a power pylon supporting the Transalpine Oil Pipeline (TAL) in late March as a deliberate act of sabotage. The 753-kilometer pipeline is a key supply route for OMV's refineries, making the incident a direct concern for European energy infrastructure security.

On a more positive strategic note, Azerbaijan's President Aliyev confirmed his country is now supplying gas to ten EU nations, including Austria and Germany for the first time. With the Southern Gas Corridor pipeline at capacity, future expansions from fields like "Absheron" and the "Shah Deniz" project could unlock an additional 10 to 15 billion cubic meters annually within two to three years, aiding OMV's efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas.

Operationally, management expects a boost from its stake in Borouge International, projected to contribute roughly EUR 140 million starting in the second quarter. Meanwhile, political developments in Germany, where the governing coalition is negotiating potential relief on energy prices including a possible suspension of the CO2 tax on fuels, could impact domestic demand and the tax burden on energy firms. OMV shares traded around 1.5% higher on the day, yet remain roughly five percent below their early April 52-week high.
